Frequently Asked Questions ..........

1. What should I do if my child brings home an overdue slip for a book I
think was already returned?

Many times a child will return books to school, but forget to bring them to
the library. Please call us if you keep getting overdue notices for a book
already returned. We do not charge overdue fines.

2. What do I do if my child brings home a book above his/her reading level?

This is an excellent opportunity to read some or all of the book to your
child. If the book is really long you could look at the pictures together.
As children become more skilled readers they will get better at choosing
books for more independent reading.

3. What if my child reads above grade level?

Sometime, especially Kindergarteners and 1st Graders, will be ready for
chapter books. Parents need to send a note or email indicating that they want
their child to check out a chapter book. Students should come to the LMC with
a student pass rather than during their scheduled LMC checkout so thay they
can receive individualized help selecting a book for appropriate content and
for their correct reading level.

Upper elementary student may request books from the Middle School with the
aid of the Library Media Specialist. The LMS may ask that the student obtain
parental permission to check out Middle School books.

4. What if my child damages or loses a book?

The library staff will gently talk to a child who has returned a damaged
book. A note will be sent home if a fine is due. Fines range from .50 --
$2.00 depending upon the severity of damage. If a book is damaged beyond
repair, you will be asked to pay 1/2 of the replacement cost. If a book is
lost you will be charged the full replacement cost. If lost books are found
within 1 year your money will be refunded. The average price of a library
bound picture book is approximately $14.00.

5. What is a Playaway?
A playaway is a recorded book on a MP3 device. Third grade and up may check
out these devices. We strongly encourage students to use their own earbuds,
headphones or plug in speakers, however, we do have earbuds for student who
don't have access to their own (inexpensive earbuds can be purchased at the
local Dollar Store). Extra care and responsibility is expected of students
who check out a playaway.

*eventual success in reading
*background knowledge

Your child may check out two books per day and have a total of 5 out at any
