What is IQ?
IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is a number
meant to measure cognitive (thinking) abilities of people in relation to their
age group. The history of I.Q. started with the Binet-Simon scale in 1905,
with one single goal in mind, to serve as a guide to identify children in
school who need extra help. In 1989, the American Academy for the Advancement
of Science listed the IQ test
among the twenty most significant scientific discoveries of the twentieth
century along with nuclear fission, DNA, and flight. The test has been refined
many times over the past century.
How Accurate is the IQ
Test?
In order to determine how "accurate" an IQ
test is, one must answer the question of what intelligence actually is. You
cannot measure something that can hardly be defined. The problem is that the
term "intelligence" has never adequately been defined adn therefore nobody
truly knows what an IQ test is supposed to measure. In spite of all of this,
today the future of thousands of children/employees is determined by the
results of this test, simply because it has its good share of accuracy. It
does not test all intelligence aspects, but it does test epistemic,
analytical, creative, facilitating, verbal, numeric, and spatial
intelligences.
What is the Purpose of
this Activity?
The purpose of the following activity is
not to assess how "smart" you are. An online IQ test, no matter how valid it
is purported to be, cannot be considered a truly valid test. It is not in a
controlled setting administered by a certified professional. Please take this
test with a grain of salt and with the mindset of how it "feels" to be
evaluated and labeled by a test such as this. We will talk about your test
results in class and you are encouraged not to share these results simply
because they are not indicative of your true intelligence.
