What is the latest that you will accept work?
I will accept classwork and homework up to 2 calendar weeks after
it is due for full credit. I will not extend the deadline, with the exception of late-adding students
(see FAQ2) for details of that exception.
The 2 calendar weeks is precise - and no allowance is made for holidays, breaks, or for days when
the class does not meet. See FAQ #5 answer for getting me your work
when you are not in class or the class is not meeting. There is no point credit given for work
submitted after that date. However, up to 20 lost points can be made up by taking the
extra-credit exam at the end of the semester.
What is the latest that you will accept online quizzes?
Quizzes are due by the due-date, and there is no make-up or due-
date extension.
A quiz is posted on the website two weeks before it is due. This
is plenty of time to take the quiz and submit it online. Please do not wait until the last moments to
take the quiz.
There is no extension given for any quiz for any reason (computer problems, computer
unavailability, error messages, personal emergencies etc.) Should the class website be unavailable
to take the exam, you must email me your answers by the due date.
Consider taking the extra credit exam at the end of the semester if you miss any quizzes to regain
lost points.
Am I expected to read this textbook? What should I read?
Yes. You are expected to read each chapter before the Lecture on the chapter is given. However,
please do not read any of the appendices unless assigned. It is particularly important to study the
Do It Exercises (see syllabus for which Do It Exercises to study) throughout each chapter, as they
provide the model for completing the assigned Do It Review problems at the end of each chapter
that are assigned for homework.
Consider using other resources on the website such as the Power Point presentations for
each chapter and the Chapter Outlines on this website, or the Accounting Tutorials (see Links on
this website). However, the best way of understanding the material you have read is to come to
class, hear the lecture, take notes, and complete the classwork in class with the help of fellow
students and teacher guidance.
Consider another form of learning (Power Point, self-study
quizzes, chapter outlines, lecture
notes) as a way of absorbing the material.
What about class attendance? How important is it? Can I attend class at IVC if I enrolled at KFLD?
I strongly encourage class attendance, however there are no points deducted should you miss
class. The trouble with missing class is that you miss the opportunity to do classwork, and if time
allows, homework in a cooperative class setting where you will receive plenty of guidance, If you
miss class at Kentfield, I urge you to attend the same class at the IVC campus,
and vice versa (see syllabus on the website for relevant dates).
You are welcome to attend any of the class offerings at either location.
Adults have busy work lives, family commitments, as well as
unplanned events that may interfere with attendance. Should you miss class, you will be losing
approximately 3 points (or 3% of your grade) unless you submit your classwork and homework to
me by other means on the dates due or within the 2 week grace period.
How do I get my classwork/homework to you if I miss class?
If you cannot attend class, you may do one of the following:
1)Email me (susanswanforsyth@gmailcom) your homework and
classwork attaching the working papers to your email.
PLEASE ONLY USE EXCEL FORMATTED WORKPAPERS OR WORK THAT IS
SCANNED INTO A PDF (ADOBE ACROBAT)FORMAT as attachments
to your email. If the size of the file is greater than 1 MB,
I cannot guarantee you that it will be received by my email.
I must receive the email by the due date or within the two week grace period.
2) Mail the work to my home address (1238 San Rafael Dr. Petaluma,
CA 94954). The envelope must be postmarked by the due date or within the two week grace
period.
How do I submit online quizzes to you? What if I don't have a computer? Are makeup exams given?
Quizzes are submitted online only. I DO NOT ACCEPT QUIZZES THAT ARE NOT COMPLETED
THROUGH THE CLASS WEBSITE, OR THROUGH EMAIL (susanswanforsyth@gmail.com)
IF THE WEBSITE IS UNAVAILABLE. If you do not
have a computer, plan to come to campus computer labs and use one. On the IVC campus, the
Internet cafe provides a number of computers. On the KFLD campus, I can provide Saturday
access to a computer lab across the hall from the class.
To take the quiz, you must fill out your name, email
address, and student id # (usually starts with a M00 - that is
Capital M, zero, zero). Your student ID # is located at your
myCOM student portal. After completing the quiz, select the display printable version
button , print your quiz, AND THEN GO BACK TO THE ONLINE VERSION
AND PRESS THE SUBMIT BUTTON. The computer should reply
with a Success message. If it does not, take the quiz again
until you receive that message. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE THAT
MESSAGE AFTER A FEW TRIES, EMAIL ME YOUR ANSWERS BY THE DEADLINE.
Keep your printed quiz, but do not submit it to me for grading. We review the test answers after
the quiz deadline has passed, and you will know which ones, if any, were incorrect by this review.
There are no makeup exams for each individual chapter online quiz. There is, however, the 20
point extra credit exam (closed book, closed note) given at the end of the semester.
What is your grading policy and grading scale? Is all work assigned required or optional?
My grading policy includes classwork (approximately 42% of the grade), chapter quizzes online
(approximately 28%) and homework (approximately 26%) and the short Enron Ethics paper (4%). I
give an optional extra credit exam for 20 additional points (20%). You can choose to complete any
assignment you wish. Below is my grading scale. I do not give "+" or "-" grades, ie B+. See also
FAQ #10, below, for the Pass/No Pass option and FAQ2 for the Incomplete option.
Grading scale:
89.5-100 points = A
79.5-89.49 points = B
69.5-79.49 points = C
59.5-69.49 points = D
below 59.5 points = F.
All work assigned is optional. You may turn in any mix of classwork, online
quizzes, homework, ethics paper, and extra credit test. What counts is the
point total at the end. Should you note that you are falling short of your goals,
you cannot make up work that is past the due date and grace period, but can only accomplish
the remaining work not yet due or not yet past the grace period. Don't let yourself get into this situation.
Turn in all your homework, attend class, and take all your quizzes in a timely manner so that
you will not have to do a closed book test as extra credit to regain lost points.
Where do I find the due dates for all work, quizzes, ethics paper & class meeting dates?
Consult the syllabus page on this website. It is updated regularly.
What are your work standards? What's DISHONEST and what's not?
All homework and classwork is to be done neatly, completely and
correctly, and by the due date using pencil or computerized
software. Anything short of these standards will have points
deducted from their work.
In class, we will work together in groups to solve problems. You
are expected to pull your own weight in the group, contributing to the problem's solution and not
simply copy others' hard work. COPYING ANOTHER'S WORK IS DISHONEST.
You are expected to come to class having read the chapter and reviewed the Do It Exercises
throughout the chapter and the classwork problems that we will be doing in advance.
Online quizzes are given for your convenience. I encourage discussion of the question (not the
answer) among students. If you COPY ANOTHER'S ANSWERS, IT IS DISHONEST.
Should I see instances of academic DISHONESTY, no points will be given to your work, and you
may be asked to leave the class.

How do I take this course 'Pass/ No Pass'?
If you do not wish to take this course for a traditional letter
grade (A,B,C,D,F), you must choose that option on mycom.marin.edu by the due date. See
"Important Dates" on this website. NOTE: YOUR GRADING OPTION AUTOMATICALLY DEFAULTS TO
A LETTER GRADE UNLESS YOU CHOOSE THE PASS/NO PASS OPTION.
If you score 69.5 points and above, you will receive a 'pass' for
the class, but no letter grade. If you score below 69.5 points,
you will receive a "no pass" for the class, and no letter grade.
What are the important dates and responsibilities for this class? Can I be dropped from this course by the instructor?
Consult the Important Dates page of this website for drop /
refund / add dates.
Please note: IF YOU DO NOT SHOW UP FOR THE FIRST WEEKS OF CLASS
AND DO NOT HAND IN A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF WORK DURING THOSE
WEEKS, YOU MAY BE DROPPED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. IF YOU ARE RECEIVING A FAILING GRADE AT
MIDTERM, YOU MAY BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE CLASS BY THE INSTRUCTOR.
I will do my best to contact students through email when I am considering dropping or
withdrawing students.
What are your student work retention policies?
I do not keep student work. If your graded work has not been
claimed by the end of the semester, I throw it out.
Do I need access to a computer, other than for taking Online Chapter Quizzes? Do I need an email account?
Yes. I frequently communicate with students through email and mycom student portal. For
example, if I have your email address, I will send you timely reminders to take the Chapter Online
Quizzes, changes in the syllabus and due dates, notification when point totals are posted on the
website. I am also available by email to answer any of your questions regarding the
classwork/homework assigned, clarification of quiz questions, etc. I strive for a 24 hour
turnaround in answering your email.
Access to the Internet will allow you to view the syllabus and take advantage of other
learning resources included at this website: Power Point presentations, Accounting Tutorials, Self-
Study Quizzes, etc.
