<<<12.04.08 DNA Model - Extra Credit Project: You can find it under Bioinstruction Files Fall or just go to http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/BuildingaDNAModel.doc. Due date: 12.11.08 (Next Friday)
SOLAR CELL PROJECT - Cudos to all the participants in the last tow days! We are on our way to make our solar cells! We had to wait with the next step until next week, because once we cover the glasses with the TiO2 layer, we must proceed without waiting too long. However, we also need some time to discuss the purpose and the meaning of what we are doing. So tomorrow, and maybe Monday, you are invited to lunch to hear more background. Tomorrow's meeting is not mandatory for the lab participation credit, but it is essential for the report.
<<<<12.02.08 Solar Cell Lab Begins tomorrow!! Interested? Serious? Show up right at the beginning of lunch tomorrow to get yourself set up in a team and get first directions. Following meetings will be on Friday, next week - all except for Monday, and then Tuesday on the week before winter break.
Extra credit DNA Model: See directions in BioINstruction Files Fall
<<<<11.26.08 Homework for Thanksgiving: 1) Study Guide Page 75-76 Due: Tuesday 2) HW Replication: p.232 ‘Apply’ p.233 ‘Apply’, Q’s 1, 4,5 p.237, bottom: ‘Critical Viewing’ p.238 1-4 p.259 14 Due: Thursday
<<<< 10.27.08 HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY GRADE??! Consider the following information given to a few concerned parents by email:
Make up work: You can make up any homework assignment for
partial credit (a week late is 40 out of 50, typically and later than that -
30 out of 50). After you have checked the grade, list the zeros that go for
homework, and find the corresponding homework questions on the assignment
sheet of that unit (green chalkboard icons on the home page).
Labs and most class activities cannot be made up.
Lab Reports: Generally cannot be made up. but please advise Joshua to
be more involved in that and make sure his group does a good job on the
report. These assignments are not too hard, but they are neglected because of
the group dynamics. With leadership it would looks different.
Notebook and Journals: Josh's class will turn in their notebooks
tomorrow to check for both notebook conditions and journals. Since ALOT of
points are involved I would put this at the top of the list.
Notebook: Notes - shows seriousness, completion; no
handouts are loose, all attached / glued onto the notebook pages. Table of
contents - is up to date, with flexibility regarding amount of details. I
advise to emphasize on the topic rather than on the activity name. Index:
Vocabulary list should be up to date, with page reference to the notes. List
of words so far is available http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/ap19.stm.
Pages should be numbered. Journals: I estimated just now 15
journals, maybe a bit more, should be completely written, typically two
questions per day, sometimes with drawings to support the text.
Test preparation: Use the Review Guide (http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/TEST22007-8ReviewGuideMembranesCells.doc),
to spot out any difficult parts. We still have two more days of instructions,
about ER-Golgi trafficking and about osmoregulation. Then - ASK QUESTIONS in
the material before and during the test, PLEASE! Test will take place this
Thursday.
Tutoring: Wednesdays with Ms. Green, C205. (EC points for at
least 45 minutes)
Extra credit:
Then there are extra credit options, such as
"Science News" reports (http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/SCIENCENEWSPROJECTGeneralScience.doc),
a careers-in-biology project (http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/CareerON-GOINGProject-Directions(Honors).doc),
for cell structure - a poster size color-coded cell (http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/CellPostersProject-ByBiomolecules.doc).
Last but not least... come to the November 1st Saturday hike
(next Saturday) for extra 50 points (!!!). I am desperate, as you can see, for
students and adults to join. it is for the entire school and so far very few
showed commitment to go. Free bus, free guide, going to Topanga State Park
8am-3pm. You are invited, too!!
OK, try not to get too confused with all the options. They are for the entire year. START by turning in the RECENT homework (Cell handouts, Lab Report). >>>>>
<<<< 10.09.08 If you want to "Look at biomolecules in the eye", that is - see them in 3 Dimensions, go to http://www.biotopics.co.uk/JmolApplet/jcontentstable.html (also added to the links for biomolecules) and take a look. Especially recommended are the view of: Proteins, Cellulose and Amylose, Phospholipids and Triglicerides, Fatty acids, and in the future - DNA and RNA.And of course you can look at Caffein and several other important molecules.
<<<<<10.06.08 Up to date homework assignment is finally posted in the correct assignment sheet ("Cells, Membranes Assignment Sheet"). My apology to those who finished their homework with the outline. I will accept both outlines and 2 questions about phospholipid and membranes.
<<<<<09.28.08 As announced in class our test will take place on Thursday, October 2nd. The review guide you were given as handout is also available on-line under "Biology Tests". It is identical to the one from 2007, except for the last question I added this year about enzymes from extreme environments of temperatures and pH. Also, please be reminded that Notebooks and journals will be graded this week. Therefore, make sure the: A. Highlight all the journals and their dates; B. Update the Table of Contents, complete the Index so far, with page numbers in thenotebooks for each individual term.
<<<<<09.09.08 Correction to our Burning vs. Non-Burning discussion (based on students' comments and on Ms. Kelly, The Chemistry teacher: Silicone, that is used to seal pipe-lines, burns. Silicon, a mineral, does not. Bones: Apparently there is some organic part to bones in addition to the calcim phosphate mineral (which is in-organic). So it is possible that the bone disintegrates becatse the proteins in it burng, leaving the minerals to disperse, but not to burn. Any more knowledge you gather - please share!
<<<<< 09.08.08 Scavenger Hunt Help: * Instructions to the Science News Extra Credit assignment are available under Bioinstruction Files FALL (Red Binder), as a Word file. * Regarding the price of a flash drive in the library - apparently they are not selling flash drives there, only floppies, and floppy discs are out of the question there days. So I will find out if the flash drives are indeed sold on campus and pass this information for you. Grade Check: I need to be taught how to upload folders onto the school website, which means I have to wait for the administration to work on it. Please be patient until your grade is up there. Hopefully by next week.
Honors / Extra Credit assignments: There is a list of assignments that sum up to 900 points for the semester and can grant you the honors credit. All of the students so far that showed interest are in period 5, but EVERYONE (Magnet or non-Magnet) can consider doing the additional assignments for extra credit. The list of assignments is given under Bioinstruction Files FALL. Note that the decision of honors / non honors must be made before the 5 week report card is out.
<<<<<< 09.07.08 Homework: From now on, please look up the assignment sheet of the current unit, "Biomolecules" for example. The questions are listed on the right column. Notebook: Be ready tomorrow! Notebooks and journals might be graded this Friday. Honors Biology: A handout with the overall requirements is ready to be distributed. If you are not in period 5 but interested in the extra assignment for extra credit, please find the file under "BioInstruction Files Fall. Lab Materials:
Marshmallows are needed desperately for our model building. It will probably take place on Tuesday.
<<<<<<< 09.01.08 In case you are checking the website before we start... Notebooks MUST be composition books, graph or line paper. You can buy one yourself, or bring $1.00 and I will buy notebook for you over the next weekend. Afterwards - you are on your own!
If you are buying the notebook already - DO NOT USE / LABEL IT YET! |
