Hello Second Grade Parents!
Our theme this month is: Christmas Customs Around the World!
We will be creating our own passport to travel around the world this month to
learn about how different cultures celebrate Christmas. We will "visit" many
countries and participate in some of their customs and traditions for the
celebration of Christmas. From this we will investigate how our own customs
and traditions are a rich blend from many other countries.
Hopefully many of you were able to get a start on the "Grandparent Interview"
and began to map out where your ancestors are from. If you didn't get the
papers sent home or have no idea where they are right now, just jot a note in
your little one's Assignment Book and I'll be happy to send you new ones! We
would like them turned in after the Christmas break in January.
In math we will continue our work with place value into the 100's and 1000's
place. We will then move into triple digit addition and subtraction with
renaming (borrowing and carrying). Keep up the work on those math facts at
home!
In religion this month we will focus on Advent. We will be sharing about
Advent traditions and customs and will be making a paper Advent wreath to go
home for a table center piece. Family prayers can be written on cards and
placed in the slots of the wreath to be remembered at family prayer time. We
will share about how Advent is a time of waiting and a time to prepare. We
prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus by bearing the Fruits of the Holy
Spirit and by prayer. Come join us for our Mass on December 18th!
In science this month we will enjoy learning about sound energy. We will
explore pitch, volume, sound waves, and vibration, as well as harmful sounds
and sound safety. Part of our unit will focus on the Nutcracker Suite. To
conclude our unit we will be going to Laxson to listen and watch a
performance of Sleeping Beauty!
God bless you this Christmas season and throughout the New Year!
May the holy angels walk with you always!
Ms. Givens
