World History

In this course students examine major turning points that shaped the modern
world, from the eighteenth century through the present. The course focuses
on the Modern World, the Rise of Democratic Ideas, The Industrial
Revolution, The Rise of Imperialism and Colonialism, World War I and its
Consequences, Totalitarianism, Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, World War II
and its Causes and Consequences, The Cold War, Nationalism in the
Contemporary World, including The Middle East: Israel and Syria. The course
will conclude with international relations and the terror that the world
faces today.
• Projects/Simulations include, but are not limited to the following:
French Revolution Storybook, Invention Hall of Fame, WWI Simulation (game),
1920’s Presentation, and the WWII Newspaper
Materials: All students need to have a spiral notebook, or a 2 inch three
ring binder, a basic set of colored pencils for mapping exercises, and a
folder for handouts.
Grading System: A weighted point system is used; Tests = 30% of the overall
grade, Projects/Essays/Notebook = 40%, Homework/Quizzes = 20%, Final Exam =
10%. Grades will be posted every Friday!
• I DO NOT accept late assignments.
• Extra credit will only be available to those students who have
completed all of their assigned work.
Academic Integrity Policy: Violations of academic integrity include, but
are not limited to the following: cheating, plagiarism, or misrepresentation
of information in oral or written form. Plagiarism means presenting someone
else’s idea or writing as if it were your own. The first offense will be
immediate failure of the assignment or assessment, and a referral will be
sent to the office. The second offense will also result in immediate failure
of the assignment or assessment. In addition, another referral will be sent
to the office and the consequence will then be determined.
Absences:
The office will determine whether an absence is excused or unexcused. It is
the student’s responsibility to find out what specific assignments were
missed, whether she/he is able to make up the assignment, and the due date
for the missed assignment. Failure to make up the missed assignment by the
given due date will result in a zero for the assignment.
If a student misses a quiz or test due to an unexcused absence, they cannot
be made up. If a student misses lecture or video notes, they need to copy
the notes from a classmate, or the teacher. Students have one day for each
day of an excused absence to make up an assignment. All make up tests are
given on Thursday (at lunch), and students are required to make up the test
the week they return to school. Students will not be permitted to make up
the test/quiz two or three weeks after it has been given.
Tardy Policy:
• A student will be considered tardy if she/he is not in the room with
all necessary materials when the tardy bell rings. If another teacher causes
the student to be tardy, a note or phone call from that teacher is required;
otherwise, it is considered unexcused.
o 1st – warning
o 2nd – lunch detention in G-3 (Thursdays)
o 3rd – referral
Class Rules:
Students are expected to abide by the following rules at all times:
• Obey all Wheatland Union High School Rules.
• Respect your teacher, fellow students, and school property.
• Do not interfere with another student’s right to learn.
• Be on time to class regularly. Bring required supplies and other
materials to class daily.
• No food or candy shall be eaten during class - WATER bottles only.
• No cell phone use during class, this includes text messaging, camera
phone, video games, or video taping during class. Students who do not follow
the rules will have their phone taken away immediately and turned in to the
office, accompanied by a phone call home and/or referral.
Class Procedures:
• If you are absent from class, please visit the assignment center for
missed assignments, or my Web page.
• If you need to use the restroom during class you must sign out using
the sign out sheet; however, students that abuse this privilege will no
longer be able to leave during class.
• The teacher excuses the class, not the bell, or the clock.
• Grades are to be discussed with the teacher before school, after
school, or by appointment.
onsequences:
The following are a list of consequences that student’s may receive who do
not abide by the rules.
• Verbal warning
• A one-page essay on the specific behavior
• Conference with the student and/or a phone call home
• Detention (lunch or after school) in my classroom
• A referral will be sent to the office
