Populist Party Campaign Poster page 221-223

Create a campaign poster for the Populist Party which shows how the party promises to answer the complaints of the farmers in the following areas:

- reforms they propose to lift the burden of debt from the farmers

- reforms of the money supply in the country

- reforms to fix the disparity of income between the rich and the poor

- reforms to give a greater voice to the people

1. Why had farming become unprofitable in the late 1800s?

2. Why did farmers support bimetallism or “free silver”?

3. Answer each question for each organization: the Grange, Farmers’ Alliances and Populists?

What is the purpose of the organization? In what ways do they attempt to help the farmer?

What economic, social and/or political reforms do they fight for?

4. Explain the relationship between inflation/deflation and the “Cross of Gold” speech.

5. What factions/divisions emerge in the country during the late 1800s? What do these factions support in regards to monetary policy and why do they support such a policy?

6. Who are the candidates for the presidential election of 1896? How are the campaigns different? What do the results say about how America views the common laborer/producer? What is the legacy of the farmers?

1. Save your ticket stub and staple it to your written work.

2. Describe one of the following demonstrations and answer the questions listed below. (Cooking, Abolitionist Rally, Infantry, School, Calvary, Medical, Artillery and Gun) Who is involved? What do they do? What does this tell you about military life and/or society during the Civil War?

3. Attend one battle and answer the following questions. Who are the generals? Who wins the battle? What is the significance of the battle? Describe the fighting and the sequence of attacks by each side.

Students will write a journal entry (entries) which compares the life of a freedman under the Radical Republican Reconstruction governments compared to Post-Reconstruction governments. How does his/her life improve? How does their life get harder? Does he/she feel better or worse off during Reconstruction than after Reconstruction? Why? In groups, students will consider the political, economic and military positions of the Union and the Confederacy. Based on the strengths and weaknesses of these topics, students will create a military strategy to win the war for both sides by answering the following questions.

How do you plan to pay for the war? How do you plan to fight the war? How do you plan to gain more political power for your country? What are your advantages? How do plan to overcome your weaknesses?
