Complete the chart for the first seven Olympians (Zeus, Poseidon, Hades,

27-36. You will complete information on the other five Olympians (Apollo,
Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, and Hephaestus) tomorrow from those same pages.

AND CHECK OUT that book from the TO Public Library. You could also use the

find useful for your report.

your commentary on or evaluation of the events and/or characters in the
chapter. The summary should NOT contain any minor details, quotes or other
unnecessary information. Your commentary, although it expresses your
evaluation or analysis of the chapter, should NOT use terms such as "I think"
or "I feel"; in general, avoid the use of the first and second-person
pronouns (I, me, you, we, us).

Study for your Short Story Vocabulary test tomorrow. Remember that the test
is divided into two sections--matching and word bank/fill-in the blank. You
are responsible only for the words marked with an asterisk (*) on the
vocabulary list. You will have the opportunity to earn extra credit by
labelling parts of speech.
REMINDER: If you are planning to use a brother's or sister's copy of To Kill
A Mockingbird, or if you will be buying your own copy, please plan to have
your book by Friday so we can begin the novel. I will bring to class the
copies available for checkout from the school novel room.
If you want to get ahead, you should go to Handouts and print a copy of To
Kill a Mockingbird Study Guide and To Kill a Mockingbird Vocabulary List.
Both documents are several pages long.
Tuesday, September 20
Study for your Short Story Unit test tomorrow. Questions will include
matching, true/false, short answer and quote identification. You may use
your note cards for the test, and you will turn in the cards with the
completed exam.
Begin reviewing for your Short Story Vocabulary test. The words marked with
a * on the unit list will be on the test, divided between the matching
section and the fill-in sentences with word bank. You will have the

Review your autobiographical narrative one last time to make sure that there
are no typos or other errors and that you have been as vivid and descriptive
as possible. Remember that tomorrow you are turning in to me the following,
in this order, from the back of your packet to the front: graphic organizer,
rough draft, peer editing sheet and final draft.
Continue reviewing for the Short Story Unit tests--the factual test will be
Wednesday, and the vocabulary will be Thursday. You will be able to use your
eight note cards on the factural portion and will staple those note cards to
the test when you turn it in. You will NOT be able to use notes on the
vocabulary portion of the test; it will cover the words that are marked with
a * on the vocabulary list and that were on the vocabulary worksheet we did
last week.
REMINDERS: Beginning on Friday, you will not need to bring your textbook to
class until further notice since we will be starting To Kill a Mockingbird.
If you already have TKAM at home or are planning on buying the novel, please
make sure you have it by Friday. You are NOT required to purchase the book
since I will bring enough copies to class for you to sign out. However, if
you wish to take notes and highlight as you read, buying the book is a good
idea.
Friday, September 16
Edit and polish your autobiographical narrative, incorporating any of the
suggestions made by your peer editor that you need. Set the essay aside, and
look at it one more time before it is due on Tuesday, September 20. When you
turn in your essay, you will also give me your graphic organizer, rough draft
and peer editing sheet, all stapled behind your final draft.
Read "The Machine That Won the War", beginning on page 454 in your textbook.
Complete a note card for the story.

Machine That Won the War" (pages 454-462) and complete a note card on the
story.

Continue working on your autobiographical narrative essay. The rough draft
is due for peer editing in class on Friday, and if you do not bring an essay

Complete the sentences on your Short Story Vocabulary Worksheet that we began
in class. Please follow these steps in completing your worksheet:
* Underline the suffixes of the words in the word bank.
* Write the abbreviation for the appropriate part of speech (n, v, adj, adv)
beside each word in the word bank.
* Read each sentence and decide what type of word (n, v. adj or adv) you need
to fill the blank.
* Look ONLY at the words in the word bank that are the correct part of speech
before selecting the one that best fits the blank.

Continue writing your Peraonal (Autobiographical) Narrative Essay. The rough
draft of your essay must be done in time for peer editing on Friday.
Remember that your essay needs to be two to three pages, double spaced, when

Using the Personal (Autobiographical) Narrative Essay guidelines, write AT
LEAST ONE paragraph of your essay. Be sure to refer to the graphic
organizer/planner you completed with details about the imagery you want to
include in your essay.
You will complete your essay over the next three days with peer editing on
Friday in class.
You will also read the last two short stories on the unit list this week, so
be sure to budget your time and work load appropriately.

If you have not already printed the Personal (Autobiographical) Narrative
Essay guidelines, please do so. Read those instructions and decide on an
event that you want to narrate. Then, using the graphic organizer we drew in
class, brainstorm the details about that event that will create dramatic
imagery--through sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Your brainstorming
should take place bit by bit over the entire weekend, not in one short
session.
