did in class. If you need another copy of the worksheet, you can print one
from the Handouts section of this web site. The 35 words that are included
on the test on Monday are the words used on the worksheet.
REMINDER: You should also continue to read in TKAM. When you walk into
class on Tuesday, you should be prepared to discuss through Ch. 22.

class, we will have a partner activity with the 35 words that are included on
the Monday vocabulary test. We will also play some vocabulary basketball, so
to be of the greatest benefit to your partner and your team, YOU NEED TO KNOW
DEFINITIONS AND PARTS OF SPEECH!!!
REMINDER: By Monday, you need to be on Chapter 22 in TKAM--reading, study

Correct your two vocabulary tests on a separate piece of paper:
1) by writing each sentence that was marked incorrect.
2) by labeling the blank in each sentence with the missing PART OF SPEECH.
3) by filling in the blank with the correct vocabulary word based on the
part of speech AND the meaning/tone of the sentence.
(HINT: Look for visual clues like "inside-the-sentence" definitions, word
clues like "and" or "but" to imply whether the sentence reinforces or
contradicts an idea, etc.)

Complete the TKAM Ch. 6-11 vocabulary worksheet in the Handouts section of
this web site.
Remember to use the three-step process we have practiced: label the parts of
speech in the word bank, then label the part of speech that logically belongs
in each sentence blank, and finally, select the appropriate word for each
blank based on part of speech, definition and connotation.
There will be a homework check on your COMPLETED worksheet.

Print the TKAM Ch. 6-11 vocabulary worksheet from Handouts and fill it out,
using the three-step process we have practiced: parts of speech in the word
bank, missing parts of speech for the sentences, THEN select the appropriate
word based on context and meaning.

Review all notes for Ch. 6-11 in preparation for the factual test, which has
been moved to Wednesday. The vocabulary test was moved to Thursday, and
tomorrow, I will give you the words from your vocabulary list that will
appear on the test. If you want to get a headstart on some of tomorrow
night's homework, print from Handouts the TKAM Ch. 6-11 vocabulary worksheet
and begin completing it, following the three-step process we practiced in
class (identify part of speech for each word in the word bank, identify part
of speech that COULD fill the blank in each sentence, and then, based on the
context of each sentence, match the word from the word bank that satisfies
the criteria.)
REMINDER: Complete the pink yearbook survey form and earn THREE extra credit
points!

staple it on top of your editing worksheet which is on top of your rough
draft.

video for the test tomorrow. The material will cover historical background
about segregation and the South, the author's life, and the characters and
events/symbols in Chapters 1-5.

The final, typed version of your personal narrative is due on
Friday and must be submitted with your peer editing worksheet as
well as your rough draft. If you have lost your peer editing

Finalize your narrative rough draft and bring it to class tomorrow for peer
editing. If you do not bring your rough draft, you will lose 15 points from
the 100 total for the essay, dropping you one letter grade.

Write the rough draft of your personal narrative essay according to the
rubric/assignment sheet we discussed in class. If you need another copy, you
can print it from the Handouts page. I will check on Monday to make sure you
have 80% to 90% of your rough draft complete. It is also mandatory on
Tuesday that you bring your rough draft for peer editing; if you do not bring
your draft on that day, you will, as the rubric states, automatically lose 15
points. The final draft will be due on Friday, October 9.
REMINDER: The test (facts and vocabulary) on TKAM Ch. 1-5, author and
context will be Wednesday, October 7.

Read Chapter 3 of TKAM and answer the study guide questions. Write your two-
paragraph journal entry for the chapter, as well. We will have time in class
tomorrow to go over journal entries so you can feel confident that you are
doing them correctly; the first paragraph is a brief summary (concrete
details or evidence) of what happens in each chapter, and the second
paragraph should be your evaluation or assessment (commentary) about what
those events prove or reveal to the reader. Writing these journal entries
provides you with a warm-up to writing your first response to literature
essay.

Read Chapters 1 and 2 of TKAM. Complete the questions on the study guide for
both chapters as well as the introductory section on the author and the
setting.
Write a two-paragraph journal entry for Chapters 1 and 2, following the
sample journal entry. For each chapter, your first paragraph should be
summary and the second one should include your comments or evaluation of the
chapter--its importance, features of a character or qualities of an event.
REMINDER: On Tuesday, there will be a FULL HW and MATERIALS CHECK to show
that you have a copy of the novel, study guide (completed for Ch. 1 and 2),
vocabulary list and spiral/journal with written entries for Chapters 1 and 2.

Study the Short Story Unit Vocabulary for the test tomorrow. The words
included on the test are the ones marked with a * on your list.
Of the 40 words, 20 will be set up as matching questions, and 20 will be in a
word bank with sentence fill-ins. You will receive 1/2 point of extra credit
for any six words for which you correctly identify part of speech.
REMINDERS:
Beginning FRIDAY, you may leave your literature textbook in your
locker and bring only your To Kill a Mockingbird book to class. We will go
to the textbook room on Friday to check out copies, so MAKE SURE YOU HAVE
YOUR ID CARD AND YOU DO NOT OWE ANY LIBRARY FINES.
You will also need to bring a single-subject spiral or a journal to class
everyday since part of your writing assignment for this novel is to do a

Write an original sentence for EACH of the 16 vocabulary words from the first
two short stories we have read. The sentences must be written in a way that
shows you understand the meaning of each word. Sentences that are too vague
or general will not be acceptable. (For example: "It is palpable." This
sentence gives no context clues regarding the meaning of the vocabulary word.)
Draw and label two plot diagrams--one for each of the two short stories we
have read--"The Most Dangerous Game" and "The Cask of Amontillado." Label
the six key points of the plot diagram and fill in specific events or
descriptions that apply for each story.
REMINDER: Bring your literature textbook EVERY DAY!!!

questions on page 12. Copy the definitions of the vocabulary on page 5,
