What is the course description?
US History: Students will be encouraged to examine opposing viewpoints as
they reflect on major topics in modern American history. Areas of study
include, but not limited to, Imperialism, Progressive Movement, World War I,
the 1920’s, The Great Depression, the New Deal, World War II, and U.S.
foreign and domestic policies since 1945, including the Civil Rights
Movement, the Cold War, and post-Cold War era.
Civics: This course will blend the elements of current civic and law issues,
as well as constitutional history. With an emphasis on activities that
foster active participation, students will experience the structure of our

What is the font requirement?
When an assignment is required to be typed, I expect it to be typed in the
following format:
Times New Roman
Size 12
One inch margins
Left justified
Double Spaced
Do not stray from this format. This is the easiest for me to read, it
ensures everyone has done the same amount of work, and it allows me to write
comments on your work for revision.

What are the rules for the class?
1) RESPECT. This idea includes respecting the school property, each
other, the faculty, etc. I do not tolerate disrespect of any kind and the
consequences of ignoring this rule are severe ranging from a teacher
detention to a suspension under the guidelines of the student handbook.
a. One way that you can show respect is by using correct language and
grammar. Do not use “AOL” or text message lingo. Your previous teachers
taught you to master the English language and you need to respect them by
fully writing out your words and looking up proper spelling.
2) WORK AND ACCOUNTABILITY. Your best effort should be put forth in
everything you do, especially in school. You are expected to work while in
class and while at home. If you do not put forth your best work, I will not
accept it. I only want the best from you, and you should only want the best
from yourself.
a. Consequences of missed homework: Teacher detention for missing more
than 2 assignments. All missed homework will be worth half credit. Must be
handed in within one week of due date or it will not be accepted at all.
b. Failure on a test: The student is required to correct ALL mistakes
at home and bring in their test the next day.
c. Effort affects learning outcomes at least as much as intellectual
ability!
3) ATTENDANCE. It will be impossible to pass this class if you don’t
show for it. Your unique presence in this class contributes to our class
discussions and we need you here to hear your opinion.
a. Tardiness is unacceptable. You will be allowed one tardy per marking
period. After that, each tardy will result in a teacher detention.
b. If in the event of an excused absence, you are expected to hand in
all work due on your absence the day of your return unless otherwise
indicated that it must be emailed or dropped off. You have two days to make
up any missed homework, class work, quizzes or tests or a zero will result.
4) FUN. Although you will be working very hard this year in this class,
I suspect you will have a lot of fun; in fact, I guarantee it. Research has
proven that you learn more effectively when you enjoy yourself, so have fun
while following the rules of the classroom.
