Dear Parents:
Welcome to the second half of the second advisory. We have jumped in with
both feet and will be running to the end of January.
First graders will be learning about American symbols, specifically in my
classroom we will be learning about The Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty and
the American Flag. The questions that will be answered are: Why do we have
symbols? What do these symbols represent and why are they important to the
United States. The students will be working in their classroom on other
symbols and rights and responsibilities of a citizen. At the end of the
advisory the children will have a book on American Symbols.
Second graders are learning about how our Government works. They are working
on law puzzles, designing posters about services our governement provides and
how our local goverment operates. They will be introduced to the three
branches of government. We are looking to organize a field trip to either
the Capitol or the White House, if anyone can help please email me at
laure.hunter@dc.gov. We will also be scheduling a field trip to the National
Gallery of Art. Information will follow.
We have changed what I am covering in my classroom for the fifth grade. The
fifth grade is learning about the Great Migration and the Harlem
Renaissance. We, hopefully, will be able to look at these two event through
the artist, Jacob Lawrence. The children are currently working on songs or
ads about moving North or the chanllenges farmers faced in the south. They
will present to their class this week.
