 HOMEWORK POLICY

WHY HOMEWORK IS ASSIGNED:

Homework is very important for your child's success. It allows your child to
review and reinforce important skills learned in the classroom. It encourages
responsibility and independence. Homework is not a punishment and should be
viewed as a way to improve academics. Homework for students in the 4th grade
is to be assigned daily and it should take students no more than 1 hour to
complete, not including the required 30 minutes of nightly reading, reviewing
for tests, completing projects, completing unfinished class work or missed
work due to an absence. Therefore, Homework is a MUST!

WHEN WILL HOMEWORK BE ASSIGNED:

Homework will normally be assigned Monday through Thursday. It will, however,
be assigned on Friday's in some occasions.

STUDENT'S HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES:

Students are responsible for their daily homework assignments. Homework is
written on the board and is discussed every day. It is your child's
responsibility to copy the homework into their agenda and take home the
materials needed. .

Homework is checked every day as a group. Homework is expected to be
completed when your child arrives to class every morning. Missed assignments
will be recorded in the NO HOMEWORK folder and your child will be responsible
for making up the work. There are consequences listed below for not
completing homework assignments. The reading log is part of the homework
assignment. Students must read for at least 30 minutes every night, including
weekends. Parents are to initial the log every night.

Neatness DOES count and turning work in ON TIME is a BIG DEAL! All papers
must be headed correctly: Name, Date, Subject/Page (H.O.W Method). All papers
must be neat and readable, must reflect that the student followed directions,
and display the student's best effort. Turning in assignments on time is
expected and it is the student's responsibility.

IF STUDENTS DO NOT COMPLETE THEIR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

If students choose not to do their homework assignments, they also choose to
lose certain privileges in the classroom. Students who do not complete their
homework will also be responsible for completing it during recess and/or in
addition to that night's homework. The consequences are as follows:

1st Time: Warning, complete during recess.

2nd Time: Complete during recess, Thinking Sheet sent home for parent
signature & no Eagle Dollars.

3rd Time: Complete during recess, parent conference, & no Eagle Dollars.

4th time: Complete during recess, parent conference with administration being
notified and/or present & no Eagle Dollars.

Some of the privileges are: free time, computer time, classroom job (door
holder, class assistant, line leader, etc.), attendance at classroom parties,
field trips, etc.

Missed assignments will affect a students' effort grade on the report card
and privilege to attend special classroom events. These consequences were
created so that the students can be held accountable for their actions. This
allows them to become more responsible and independent individuals. Students
are responsible for making up any missed assignments.

PARENT'S HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES:

Parents play an important part in making homework a positive experience.
Please check out Homework Tips for more information and ideas.

EXCEPTIONS FOR TURNING IN HOMEWORK LATE:

If for some reason (sickness, emergency, etc.) a student is unable to
complete their homework assignment, please write a note, and the assignment
will be excused and the student will have one day to turn in the assignment.
However, please do not write a note asking for more time to complete the
assignment if the reason is lack of materials, your child forgot the
assignment, or your child stayed up late. It is not fair to those students
that DO complete and turn in their assignments on time. Please remember this
will only hurt your child.

PROJECTS:

All students are given sufficient time to complete book reports and other
projects throughout the school year. There will be no exceptions for turning
in projects after the due date. If a student is going to be out on the day
the project is due, it is the parent's responsibility to contact me and make
arrangements to turn the project in before the due date. The parent can also
make arrangements to drop off the project on the day it is due. Not
completing projects will result in the student earning a "zero". This will
greatly impact your child's final grade. NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
