Madame Kleffner |
FAQThis page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Where can I find Madame Kleffner if I need help outside of class? Since I travel between the junior high and the high school, please let me know AHEAD OF TIME whenever possible, if you need to meet with me. However, on most days you can find me BEFORE SCHOOL at the high school (Room B38) and AFTER SCHOOL at the junior high (Room 118). Please stop by if you have questions or if you just want to say hello! How can I practice French pronunciation at home? Talk to yourself!!! While riding in the car, walking home, riding the bus, cleaning your room, etc, review vocabulary in your head that we covered in class that day. Even if you simply pronounce to yourself each word from the text or vocabulary list, it helps! Look at objects around you and see how many you can name in French. Create a mini-conversation in French in your head. It may sound crazy, but it will help! If you'd like to listen to French, check to see if you have the SCOLA channel on cable. Then check the listings at Scola.org to see when the news airs from France or Quebec. Check to see if Madame has posted any helpful links on the current vocabulary on our class website. I hope to add more sound files throughout this year! How can I be successful when studying a world language? Review, review, review. Practice, practice, practice!!! Even if Madame doesn't give written homework, you need to review and study your vocabulary for at least 15 minutes every evening. In a language class, each new concept builds upon all previous concepts. It's EXTREMELY IMPORTANT not to forget what we've already covered! How can I practice vocabulary at home? A good way to practice your French vocabulary is to make flashcards. A picture on one side with the French word on the other is ideal. However, French on one side with the English meaning on the other side is OK too. If you have internet access, check Madame Kleffner's class website to see if there are any quizzes posted for the vocabulary you would like to practice. Some links even have sound files which allow you to listen to native French speakers. You might even do your own web search for information on a particular concept we're studying. Let Madame know if you find a useful site! Another option -- there is a CD-ROM or DVD available from our textbook publisher. It includes various games and practice exercises (with sound) which directly correlate to our textbook chapters. See Madame Kleffner if interested. May I discard my papers and homework after a chapter test? In one word, NO! Keep all vocabulary lists, verb charts, grammar notes, etc. Keep anything that provides information. Generally, you do not need to keep homework assignments and partner activities, though we will keep some assignments in our classroom portfolios. In a world language class, we are CONTINUOUSLY building on prior knowledge. All concepts from the past are important, so you will want to be able to refer back to previous vocabulary lists and notes. Plus -- You'll need them in order to prepare for the final exam! 6th Grade Intro Class -- May I discard my homework after it has been checked? No! Since you do not receive a textbook for the nine-week introductory class, you MUST keep all notes and all worksheets/homework handouts. You will use these materials to prepare for tests and quizzes. After a unit has been completed and you have taken the test, Madame Kleffner will let you know what materials you may discard. 6th Gr. Intro --Which language should I focus on for future study/classes? There is no one best answer. Your choice depends upon personal interest, your field of interest for careers, travel interests, etc. At Mahomet-Seymour, you have the option of pursuing studies in French or Spanish. During our 9-week 6th grade intro class, we will be discussing various areas/careers/etc. where these languages are most needed. |
