The Eiffel Tower was built for
the International Exhibition of
Paris of 1889.
Of the 700 proposals submitted in
a design competition, Gustave
Eiffel's was the chosen design.

The Champs Elys�es (Elysian
fields) were originally nothing
but fields, until Marie de
Medicis decided in 1616 to put up
a long tree-lined pathway.
Today, the Champs Elys�es is one
of the most famous streets in the
world.

Notre-Dame dates back to the 13th
century and is one of the
masterpieces of Gothic art in
Western Europe. Its stainglasses
and the huge interior are
breathtaking.

Mont Saint Michel was built as a
medieval castle. It has two
large towers to defend the
entrance to the castle.
St. Michael became a symbol of
the allied landing in Normandy
during the Second World War.
