About The Teacher

Education:
When Northwood High School opened in the fall of 1969, I was among the first
freshman class. Four
years later I graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1971. I received a
Bachelor of Science in
Chemistry in 1975 from Centenary College. In 1996 I was awarded a Masters in
Education, also from
Centenary. I obtained National Board Certification in Chemistry in the fall
of 2004.
Teaching Experience:
Between the year of 1980 and 1990 I was a lab instructor in the Chemistry
Department of Centenary
College and taught one year at Evangel High School in Shreveport. In the
fall of 1990 I returned to
Northwood to teach chemistry/physics/physical science. In the spring of 2002
I recruited students
for a Chemistry II/Dual Credit class at Northwood, which was first offered
that fall. I have organized
and coached Northwood’s Science Olympiad teams since 1994 and this year I am
designing and
teaching a course in Science Olympiad (Scientific Research and Application),
as well as an ACT
Preparation course. I have also taught math as an adjunct instructor in the
Off-Campus program at
Bossier Parish Community College and chemistry online through Louisiana
Virtual School.
Other Training:
I have taken graduate level classes in math at Centenary College (Advanced
Calculus for Secondary
Teachers) and physics at Northwestern University. I have done summer
research in the Biochemistry
Department at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in
Shreveport. I am also trained as a
mentor for candidates for National Board Certification.
Personal:
I have been married to Bill Johnson, also a Northwood graduate, since 1972
and we have three grown
children (all Northwood graduates) and one granddaughter (a potential
Northwood graduate). Since
2003 we have lived in the Northwood community, having completed the
monumental task of
building our own home.
