Syllabus 2008-2009

       I.            Prerequisites for Course: Algebra II

  1. Course Description: The course will be a student-centered program, where students are lead to discover mathematical ideas, communicate what they have learned, and apply what they know.
  2. Course Goals: The goal for the course is that each student will meet the standards set for proficiency:  demonstrating and understanding concepts, skills, and relationships in number/computation, probability/statistics and algebraic ideas, and demonstrating an effective application of the solving process.
  3. Projected Units to be Studied:
    1. Families of Functions
    2. Systems of Equations
    3. Quadratics and Imaginary Roots
    4. Statistical Models and Functions
    5. Theory, Experiment, and Simulate Probability
    6. Sequences and Series
    7. Periodic & Exponential Functions
  4. Resources to be Used:
    1. Text: Algebra II. Prentice Hall Mathematics.
    2. Web Pages at www.phschool.com & www.algebra2.com
    3. TI-83 & TI-84 Graphing Calculators
    4. Microsoft Excel
    5. Algebra tiles & other math manipulatives
    6. Additional supplemental resources
  5. Planned Testing Points:
    1. Lesson Quizzes (Open Ended or Performance Events)
    2. Check Point Quiz (Multiple Choice & Open Ended/Open Response)
    3. Unit Test (Multiple Choice, Open Ended & Open Response)
    4. Projects (Presentations, Peer Teaching, Lab, Mastery Learning, etc.)
    5. Semester Exam (Multiple Choice & Open Response)
  6. Performance Standards and Expectations:
    1. Students’ grades will be determined according to CPSB guidelines.
    2. Students should receive A, B, or C average in order to be successful in Algebra II.
    3. Students will be expected to read and review chapter sections and example problems in the textbook outside of class time. Other outside of class assignments may include, but are not limited to, practice problems, collecting data, preparing presentations, designing projects, etc.
    4. Students are responsible for collecting make-up work from when they are absent, and turning in the assignments in a timely manner (according to the procedures outlined in the Student Handbook of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline)
    5. Students are expected to complete problems that will be turned in for a grade in pencil. Students are responsible for supply their own pencils.
  7. Supplies
    1. Binder, folder, or notebook
    2. Loose leaf paper
    3. Pencils (mechanical pencils are allowed)
    4. Calculator – TI Graphing Calculator is strongly recommended for class and for home.  We will use TI software in class and learn how to use the calculators in class.
    5. Math fee for project supplies, special paper, printer ink, etc.
