Welcome to Social Studies!!!
The Big Idea project #3 is due 3/14/2012. Big Idea
topics can include the Constitution, Black History Month (see requirements on
the Black History Month page of this site), Manifest Destiny, and Causes of
the Civil War. Remember to discuss in the paper how the project addresses the
10 themes of social studies.
We are beginning our Manifest Destiny Unit on 2/10/12. Students will work on
this through next week with our test on February 17th. Some students will be
participating in an independent study (see paragraph below.)
AIG Students are participating in the National Civil War Essay Contest through
the Gilder Lehrman Institute by completing and independent study in social
studies and AIG class next week. The assignment will be given on 2/10/12 and
students will have until 2/22/12 to submit the essay via email. Five of the
essays will be selected to represent our school and entered into the national
competition. Chicod was fortunate last year and had a student place 3rd at
the National Level! She and her family got a trip to NYC and were honored at
an annual gala for the Institute. It was an amazing trip and we have many
students that are more than able to attain this type of success this year!
If you are not an AIG student, you can still participate. I will be selecting
a few students with a great interest in the Civil War to write an essay as
well. If you are interested in this contest and I do not approach you, please
let me know so we can talk about it.
National History Day competition is scheduled tentatively for 2/28/12 from
1:30-2:30 pm at Chicod and the finalists from each category will be attending
the Regional Contest at ECU on 3/21/12. More details to follow.
