Accelerated Reader is a registered trademark of Renaissance Learning, Inc.
(formerly Advantage Learning Systems, Inc.). Renaissance Learning has
developed the ATOS Readability Formula for Books to estimate how difficult
text is to read. The resulting "readability level" helps teachers, parents,
and school media specialists match students to appropriate books. Readability
levels also help promote students' independence by encouraging self-selection
of books. It is so very important to remember, however, that matching books
to students is not a mechanical process. All readability formulas should be
used with caution because it isn't simply a matter of putting a number on a
book, assigning a number to a student and matching the numbers. Matching
students and books is a two-step process: first, using the readability or
ATOS formula; and, second, using continuous adjustment, which is the most
important step.
How is the Accelerated Reading Level determined?
The ATOS Readability Formula is based on calculations of:
semantic difficulty as measured by word length, word familiarity, or word
frequency; syntactic difficulty as measured by sentence length; and
book length.
ATOS Readability or AR levels indicate reading difficulty, not
appropriateness of material! In other words, the AR level as noted on the
spine of a book does not indicate that a book is suitable for particular
students solely because of readability. Renaissance Learning will not censor
books based on the maturity of the theme or issues of language. These
decisions are up to the professional judgment of the students' parents, the
teachers and the media specialist. http://www.renlearn.com/
