This Week In Room 6 Back to a full week of learning!!
Reader's Workshop continues. This week the students will practice identifying the problem and solution in their books. They will also use a graphic organizer to help distinguish the important story elements in the beginning, middle and end. Finally they will use the graphic organizer to help retell the story.
Our writers are writing, writing, writing in Writer's Workshop. We will have an author's celebration on Monday. On Tuesday we begin our letter writing unit. The students will learn the format of a letter and list the various reasons for writing a letter. Later in the week, the students will begin writing letters and practice combining simple sentences using, and, but and or.

Math begins with Mad Minute Monday! This week we will begin Unit 3 - Place Value, Money and Time. The students will be using Base 10 blocks to explore place value. They will also practice writing 3 and 4 digit numbers - remember to use the zero as a place holder. We will also practice with 2 difficult concepts -- time and money! Practice telling time and counting coins at home!! On Friday the students will participate in a Data Day. The data they collect will be used to make a tally chart, as well as, a bar graph. Nightly practice with the basic facts would be beneficial.
In Social Studies this week we will continue to explore globes, maps, continents and oceans. We will also begin Unit 3 - The Past. We will learn about the history of our country in one chapter. This week we begin with the Native Americans. A map quiz of the continents and oceans will be given on November 19th!
In Science the students will be investigating rolling cups. They will observe rolling systems with different sized wheels and with weight attached to the wheels. They will also explain how cups can roll straight and what happens when weight is added to rolling cups.
In Health the students will continue to investigate the different body systems and describe ways to keep healthy. This week we will learn about the circulatory and respiratory systems.
So you can see, Second Grade is a very busy place to be!
