Works Cited –General Rules

Ø       Place the words “Works Cited” (without the quotes) at the top of the page.

Ø       Set all margins to 1”  

Ø       Double-spaced the entire page.

Ø       The first line for each citation sets up on the left margin; additional lines are indented five (5) spaces. 

Ø       List citations in alphabetical order.

Ø       Write dates in this format:  day month year Example:     4 January 2004.

Ø       When more than one copyright (year of publication) date is given, use the most recent date.

Ø       When more than one place of publication is given, use the first one listed.

Ø       Type “ED.” (without the quotes) before the name of an editor. Example:  ED. David Smith

Ø       If there are 2 or 3 authors or editors, type all the names. Example:  Smith, Joseph, Tom Keys, and Ann Wu.

Ø       If there are more than 3 authors or editors, type the first author or editor’s first and last name followed by “et al.” (without the quotes)

Ø       If you use several web pages from the same web site – write one citation for the web site.

Book

Author’s last name, first name.  Title.  Place of publication: Publisher, Year

 

       of publication.

Magazine, Newspaper

Author’s last name, first name.  “Title of the article.” Title of Magazine or

 

      Newspaper.  Day Month Year:  Page(s). 

Encyclopedia Article

Author’s Last Name, First Name (Author for the specific article, if listed).

 

       “Title of article.” Name of encyclopedia.  Editor.  Volume.  Place of

 

       publication:  Publisher, Year of Publication.

Magazine or Newspaper Article from an online database such as EbscoHost

Author’s last name, first name.  “Title of article.”  Title of Magazine or   

 

       Newspaper Day Month Year:  Page numbers.  Name of Database  Name of

 

     Subscription Service. Name of the library. Day Month Year  

 

       Accessed <web address>.

Article from an online database such as Facts on File, Country Watch, World Book Online

Author’s last name, first name.  “Title of article.”  Name of Database. Name of

 

      Subscription Service.   Name of the library.  Day Month Year

 

       Accessed <web address>.

Regular Web Sites 

Special Note:

If a web site does not have an author, editor or name of an organization, do not use it!

Author’s last name, first name.  “Title of article or web page.”  Name of web

 

      site.  Editor. Day Month Year the web site was updated.  Name of the

Personal Interview
