We are continuing with the Readers and Writers Workshop. Students have
been reading their leveled books as well as books of their choice that they
can read at an independent level. We have been learning about dialogue in
books and the differences between fiction and non-fiction books and how they
are read differently. We are now learning how to use pictures and text to
help figure out difficult words in a book. Students are learning to write
about small moments in their lives and use details appropriately to extend
their writing. This allows the reader to have a clear picture of the writers
intent. Students have also learned to write friendly letters and persuasive
letters. Our next writing unit when persuasive letters is completed will be
writing a biography.
In social studies we have studied Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Ruby
Bridges, Nat Turner, and George Washington Carver. We are studying
Harriett Tubman currently, and Abraham Lincoln and George Washington will follow.
In science we have begun learning about the desert habitat. The last
habitat we will be studying will be the Rainforest. Then we will move on to
the Solar System.
In math we are learning to write three digit numbers in standard form,
expanded form, and in number words. We will also be learning to add and
subtract three digit numbers with and without regrouping, and to estimate.
In health we have talked about fire safety, that words are not for
hurting, the difference between telling and tattling, and school wide we will
be talking about respect. Currently we are working dental health and
nutrition.
