My Philosophy of Education

"Since philosophy is the art which teaches us how to live, and since
children need to learn it as much as we do at other ages, why do we not
instruct them in it."- de Montaigne

Education needs to provide all students with a nurturing environment so
that they may acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to
survive, cooperate, contribute, compete, and thrive in an ever-changing
global community. I believe it is important for students to understand
central concepts, methods of inquiry, and structures of the discipline to
make the content meaningful to all learners. "What is knowledge if there is
no understanding?" (Stobaeus)
Students learn in numerous unique ways. The teacher should provide
varying classroom activities to allow for each of these students to showcase
his or her own distinctive method of learning. Students in my classroom
will be empowered to achieve, as well as receive motivation to take risks
and responsibilities for their own education.
Choices should be made available for the students to actively
participate in the learning process. When students are given choices
regarding the framework of content material, structure of the class, and
classroom policies, and procedures, they will take ownership in the process
that is rightfully theirs.
Through the process of inquiry, students have the ability to construct
much of their understanding of the natural world on a "want to know"
foundation. Seeking appropriate resolutions to questions and issues implies
emphasis on the development of inquiry skills that will enable students to
continue the pursuit for knowledge throughout life.
My philosophy of education is continually growing. I will always be a
learner and a teacher, learning each day from my students, my school, and
my community. Transforming these lessons into knowledge that I can use to
better understand and help my students, to better serve Lincoln
Elementary, and to better the Rockaway Borough community.
