Frequently Asked Questions About BSI
What is BSI?
BSI is referred to as Basic Skills Instuction. It is a supplementary
program that reinforces "basic skills" in reading, language arts, and math.
The students work with the BSI teacher in a small group setting. The BSI
teacher and the classroom teacher work closely together to identify the
skills that need reinforcement.
How do students get put in the BSI program?
First and second grade students are assessed toward the end of each school
year. Their performance on that assessment (depending on where the cut off is)
puts them into the BSI program for the following year. Kindergarten students
are assessed when they register for Kindergarten with the Brigance
Screening. Third grade students are assessed by their score on the Terra
Novas at the end of second grade. Students can also be recommended by their
classroom teacher.
Will my child ever exit the BSI program?
Since we work so closely with the classroom teachers, we are constantly
communicating on the performance of each student. When we feel a child does
not need these services anymore, you will be contacted. We keep a close
watch on that student to make sure they are continuing to progress.
How will I know how my child is doing in the BSI Program?
At the end of each marking period, you will get a progress report regarding
your child's performance at school. It will go home with the report card.
