Classroom News

October 6 - 10, 2008

This week ends with an early dismissal for the students on Friday. Also, if
possible, please send in a white tee shirt for your child by Friday. I will
be tie-dying shirts this weekend. On Monday, the class will be assigned
their first book report, due on October 20th. They are to read a fictional
chapter book.

In Social Studies, the students will continue to learn about latitude and
longitude, including doing an activity using yarn for the parallels and
meridians.

In Language Arts, the students will take their selection test on Monday on
the story they read last week, "Family Pictures" by Carmen Lomas Garza.
Then, they will spend the rest of the week creating their own "family
pictures", writing about and illustrating stories from their lives. Our
Spelling list will consist of words that have the blends thr, scr, str, or
squ. And, in Grammar, the students will focus on identifying and writing
declarative and interrogative sentences.

In Math, the students will develop strategies for combining numbers,
especially money amounts, by performing a series of activities such as
grocery shopping, menu selection, & book ordering. The class will be asked
to bring in (clean) empty food containers from home that we can use for
grocery shopping.

And, in Science, the class will do experiments with convex and concave
lenses, and then read Chapter 1 on Light, taking notes on important facts.
On Friday, there will be a test on light: what it is, why it's important,
the two kinds of light, what reflection and refraction is, and how convex
and concave lenses work.
