| St. Barnabas Hospital - A Teaching Hospital of the Joan and Sanford I. Weill
Medical College of Cornell University
St. Barnabas is a 458 bed acute care, private hospital located in
the "Little Italy" neighborhood of the Bronx, near the NY Botanical Garden,
Fordham University, and the Bronx Zoo. We accept approximately 30 PGY-1 each
year into our (non-pyramidal) catagorical IM residency program. (We usually
receive about 3000 applications!) Our residency is affiliated with the
Weill Medical College of New York Hospital-Cornell, and students from there
and elsewhere do rotations at our hospital. Fellows from Cornell (usually
ID) spend time at our facility, and our residents currently do some of their
electives at Cornell, usually Cardiology.
Although our program is a catagorical IM residency, it does stress primary
care, including an emphasis on continuity of care to our local community,
communication skills, cultural competency and clinical research. This fits
in well with the Hospital's three-part mission of patient care, teaching, and
clinical research.
Additional information about the Hospital and its residencies is found in
other sections, which you will encounter as you explore. Usually one of the
first questions we are asked is "What kind of resident are you looking for?"
We are looking for intelligent, motivated, self-directed physicians with
excellent communication skills, good clinical judgement, and empathy.
