As you know, the New York State Hospital Code, at Section 405.4(f),
generally
restricts hospitals from having on staff post-graduate trainees who, as part
of their education in a foreign medical school, spent more than 12 weeks of
clinical clerkship in a country other than the country in which the medical
school is located. A foreign medical school can have this restriction waived
with approval of the New York State Education Department (SED).
For your information, there are now ten foreign medical schools on the list
approved by SED. That is, graduates of these schools are eligible for post-
graduate training positions in New York teaching hospitals even if they have
spent more than 12 weeks in a clinical clerkship in another country. The
approved schools are:
American University of the Caribbean
Fatima School of Medicine
Ross University
St. George’s University School of Medicine
St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine (approved effective April 5,
2004)
Medical University of Lublin
Medical University of Silesia
MD Program in International Health and Medicine at Ben Gurion University of
the Negev
Saba University School of Medicine (approved effective May 29, 2003)
Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara
