Syllabus/Curriculum

A printed syllabus is given to all new residents at orientation.  
Topics of importance with which residents should become familiar 
include:
1.  When to perform an OGTT and HbA1c.  Whom to screen for DM.
2.  How to prescribe a diet.
3.  How to teach patients to monitor their blood sugar.
4.  An appropriate strategy for the use of insulin or pills.
5.  Standards of care for diabetes.
    Weight reduction strategies and bariatric surgery 
6.  Diagnosis of gestational diabetes and its significance.
7.  How diabetes complicated by pregnancy is different.
8.  Appropriate evaluation of hypoglycemia.
9.  Optimal management of DKA and its complications.
10. How to evaluate and treat hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Whom to 
    screen.
11. What to do for the patient with a thyroid nodule.
12. Evaluation of amenorrhea, hirsutism, and PCOS.
13. Diagnosis and treatment of hypercalcemia.
14. Hyponatremia and hypernatremia management.
15. "Incidentalomas" - what to do.     
16. Cross-Cultural Competence-endocrine pearls  
     The impact of endocrine diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and
     obesity, disproportionately affect ethnic minority populations.  The 
     impact of these diseases in ethnic minority groups is greater than in the
     majority population in the US.  By understanding the role of certain 
     cultural factors in these endocrine disorders, the resident stands to 
     deliver more effective care.
