MATH   Grades 7 and 8 Course Requirements 2008-09

Dear Parents and students:

Seventh and eighth grade students must begin to prepare for state exams in seventh and eighth grade, as well as, learn the fundamentals necessary for regents level instruction in high school. Students will have to work very hard over the next two years to master the needed skills for academic success in the future.  However, there is help available beyond classroom instruction, through peer tutoring and extra help.  I encourage students to seek help when needed; do not wait until the day before a major exam. I would also encourage parents to contact me with any individual concerns.  I’m looking forward to a successful year together!

            Mrs. Galletti

General Information

1.         Many different techniques will be used to assist students in learning math.  Classroom instruction will consist of traditional means of teaching, such as, note taking and working examples, as well as, group discovery activities, use of manipulatives, (math toys), technology, oral drills and games.

Text book- Prentice Hall Middle Grades Math- Course 2 and 3.  Each student will also receive a Prentice Hall workbook, complete with notes and guided examples.

Website support for text books is available through my links page.

2.         Students are expected to be prepared for class.  Notebooks, workbooks, textbooks, calculators and all other listed supplies must be brought to class every day. This will be reflected in preparedness grade points.

3.         School Website : www.stcolumba.net        Go to - Classroom home pages - Room 4 (e-mail link )

Homework

Math homework is assigned almost every day, except on quiz or test days.  A workbook page should not take more than 20 minutes to complete. It is crucial for students to practice skills learned immediately in order to master them.  Homework will be checked every day and sometimes graded.  Parents will be notified if a child misses more than 3  homework assignments in any marking period.  If homework is not completed on a regular basis, it will substantially lower the student’s overall grade. Completing all assignments will help to raise a student’s grade.

4.         All work must be shown in workbook or on loose leaf; students who refuse to show work will not be given credit for the assignment.

5.         All workbook homework is due the following day.  Since the answers are reviewed in class, failure to complete a page will result in zero points for that page.  A workbook left at home or in another class will also result in zero points.

6.         Only those students absent may make up a workbook page, and this must be completed within the week.

7.         Collected assignments and projects will be accepted only one day after the due date, minus 10% of points.

Notebook

One section of a spiral notebook and one folder section are needed.  Students are expected to take notes and record all examples given.  Math notes should be used to help students complete homework.  Students are not to write or scribble on their notes, or on covers of notebooks and workbooks.

Tests and Quizzes

All tests are announced in advance. Cumulative exams will be given mid year and at the end of the year.

All tests and quizzes are to be completed in ink.  White out is not permitted.

All tests  require a parent signature, and must be returned within two days.  Students should retain all tests and quizzes in their math folder.

Returned tests will count as a checked homework (2 points).

* After school extra help is sometimes available before a unit exam, and usually during recess.

Grading Policy

Grades will no longer be computed using an average.  Instead the grades will be based on a total point system.  A total number of points will be given to each assignment throughout a quarter.  The student will be given the grand total at the end of each quarter.  Students will be required to keep a record of all points received on quarterly grade sheets.  To compute grade average, divide student points earned by total points.  Ex.  180 ÷ 200 = .9 0r 90%

Note: Students have a wide variety of  assignments and activities in any given quarter to ensure success, as well as bonus points given on tests, therefore; extra credit assignments will not be offered.

Math grade will be based on the following points :
