Parent Guide to Science Fair

Timeline to get the Science Fair project completed in a timely fashion.

USE THE TIMELINE PAGE AND STAY ON TARGET - GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO
COMPLETE PROJECT

CHECK YOUR CHILD'S SCIENCE NOTEBOOK FOR EXACT DUE DATES

OCTOBER 15 - NOVEMBER 5 - All topics should be approved and hypothesis
written

NOVEMBER 28
Order posters and other materials for the project.

DECEMBER 10 - 15
Read the research materials and write a rough draft of the summaries that are
required for the notebook.
Summaries are for each source. Three sources - three separate summaries.

January 2-9,
Do the actual experiments, if you are not successful the first time, analyze
it and redo the experiment. Be sure to keep track of what you do and for
your data. This information should be dated and be a part of your notebook it
includes all raw data. It should be part of record observations and data.

Remember to keep copies of anything that you do to have for your notebook and
poster.

January 11 - Copy of procedure due for class. Materials and steps

January 14 - 25
Make the tables and graphs. Do them on regular paper before you put them on
the computer. If you have problems bring it to class so that we can help.

January 28 - February 2
Organize and make the poster. Take your time do a little each night. Use
color and creativity.
Neatness counts. Be sure all parts are labeled. Leave a spot for the
conclusion or any part that is not ready for the poster.

February 5 - 9
Begin your notebook. Begin with the title page and table of contents, number
the pages in the notebook. Remember to number only the right hand page. The
left side is not used.

February 7 - Data check - charts and graphs should be brought to class for
advice

February 12 - 16
Continue with the notebook. Write all the necessary information into your
notebook. Follow the guideline given so no sections are forgotten. If you
have a question about a section: email me or stop and ask in school before you
do it incorrectly.

February 19 - 22
Complete any sections or information that needs to be completed. Be sure to
use the bibliography guideline on the library webpage for proper set up.

February 23 - Bring projects to school.

Although I realize that the science fair is quite extensive in our school it
does not have to be a source of stress. Your life should not stop because of
the fair. If it has been in the past evaluate why.

Help your child get organized.

Be sure his topic is one he is interested in not one you think will win a
prize. If they are not interested you will only have a fight.

Adhere to the schedule. Do not allow them to put it off, this only adds to
stress. Science homework until the fair will be minimal. This does not mean
that there will be no test or no other work, but there will not be any long
range work. So treat the work for the science fair as homework and get some
done each week.

Good Luck.
