Summer Reading Assignment

Third Grade:  Summer Reading Assignment and Poem Writing Assignment

The summer provides you with a wonderful opportunity to read books to help prepare you for third grade. J

For your summer reading assignment, you are to read one book* and complete a “summary” report.

Follow the directions below.

1.  On lined paper write a summary of the book you read.  It should include the following points:

  • Title and author of the book
  • Setting of the story (time and place)
  • Main characters
  • Problem in the story
  • How the problem is solved
  • What you liked best about the book.

2.  Make a cover for your summary:

  • Draw a picture of your favorite scene on a piece of construction paper.
  • Write the title of the book, and the author’s name, at the top of the paper.
  • Write your name at the bottom right hand corner of the paper.

In order to earn the best grade:

  • Write your summary in your neatest cursive handwriting.
  • Your work should be free from spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.
  • Write in complete sentences, using strong verbs and colorful adjectives.
  • Be creative in your cover – it counts as part of your grade!
  • Your work must be completed on time.

The reports are due on the first day of school, September 3, 2008.   As always in third grade, do your very best work!

God bless you!
