SLT Kinryfor Respectfully submitted by Liz Daley Members present: Liz Daley, Debra Scarano, Cheryl Callaghan, Colleen Orth, Absent: John Farrell, Gail Gemmell, Adeline Anderson, Debra Paskowski The SLT is still looking for a sales connection with Apple to manage the SLT funds in order to purchase books. Other questions to be brought up with Joanne Fury: How will teachers get the pages made by all different students into one book? Do they all have to make their page at a separate time with the same file? This may make the project difficult to manage. Many teachers and their classes are continuing to participate in the ibook Mac Lab training. It is not clear at this time how many teachers will have material ready to be published. Mrs. Orth brought in her ibook and shared some of the work her students did. She said that she preferred to work with the Comic Life software because the students have more freedom with the layout of text on their pages. There are more design possibilities with Comic Life. Members are encouraged to share progress on book creations and lab trainings. Our next meeting is Monday, for Respectfully submitted by Liz Daley Members present: John Farrell, Liz Daley, Debra Scarano, Cheryl Callaghan, Adeline Anderson, Colleen Orth, Absent: Gail Gemmell, Debra Paskowski Members discussed the memo that was received from the SLT Project Approval Committee. Mrs. Orth collected data from the office on the number of students per classroom, then all members worked together to calculate possible allocation of expenses using different prices of books. The committee generated specific budget information. The attached page of information will sent to the SLT Project Approval Committee (after members email their final approval). It was agreed by all that the most efficient and effective way to managed the SLT funds to purchase books would be to work through an Apple sales agent. Ms Orth reported that she had asked Mrs. Fury about her contacts with the Apple Computer Co. Ms. Fury only had a technician contact. Mrs. Scarano will ask Mr. Farrell to check with Mr. Hill regarding possible sales contacts. She will also pursue other contacts if necessary, since she is also the PTA Chairperson. Many teachers and their classes are participating in the ibook Mac Lab training. Mrs. Anderson shared that she was working on an “About the Author” page. Most other teachers have had at least two classes at this point. Liz Daley will email and send copies of all of these documents, once she has approval from the SLT Committee members. Our next meeting is Monday, December 15, for Respectfully submitted by Liz Daley Members present: John Farrell, Liz Daley, Debra Scarano, Debra Paskowski, Cheryl Callaghan, Absent: Gail Gemmell, Adeline Anderson, Colleen Orth Though meeting dates were established before the beginning of school, there have been conflicts for many of the members. The committee will work on re-scheduling the dates on days when more members will be available to attend. We discussed last year’s project results. Overall, everyone was pleased with the new non-fiction books. The committee discussed the idea of continuing this project for this year. Members looked over a sample book of student writing that was produced at Brinkerhoff. Mr. Farrell described the new initiative in the area of writing. Teachers are in the process of attending trainings on writer’s workshop, new Mac iBook technology, and developing a learning community in which to share ideas about teaching writing. Mr. Farrell showed members the Mac lab iPhoto books that can be purchased online. There was concern that they may not provide enough area for student-written text. Mr. Farrell will look into this. Mrs. Callaghan will bring in a sample of what the $9.99 photo books look like. Mr. Farrell will describe the idea at the next faculty meeting. He will check with teachers at their grade level meetings to see how much interest there is in the book publishing idea. Members will bring ideas for related activities to the next meeting. The SLT is aware of the project submission deadline is November 1st. They will meet again on Oct 16th to finalize the plan. Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 16, for Respectfully submitted by Liz Daley Members present: John Farrell, Liz Daley, Debra Scarano, Debra Paskowski, Cheryl Callaghan, Adeline Anderson, Colleen Orth, Absent: Gail Gemmell Members received a draft proposal that was written by Mr. Farrell and Liz Daley. Members looked over a sample book from Mac iPhoto. They also compared a book of student writing that was produced at Brinkerhoff. Mr. Farrell explained the plan. Teachers are in the process of attending trainings on writer’s workshop, new Mac iBook technology, and developing a learning community in which to share ideas about teaching writing. Mr. Farrell and the teachers present felt that there is plenty of interest in the book publishing idea. Mr. Farrell found out that there are enough pages for student-written text. Specific ideas are listed in the plan. Ms. Roa, the art teacher, is interested in collaborating with classroom teachers to include student art in the new iPhoto books. The SLT was not aware that the outline was a separate document, which contained many questions to be answered and submitted separately by Oct.22. All members present, approved the project plan for submission. Members worked together on the Smartboard creating a document, which answers the questions that are asked on the Appendix B outline. Liz Daley will email and send copies of all of these documents. Our next meeting is Monday, November 17, |
