Sixth graders are really getting into The Cay by Theodore Taylor. This is a wonderful coming of age
story that deals with issues of prejudice and survival. We will be watching snippets of the survival movie
Castaway with Tom Hanks and simulating a variety of situations to try to understand Phillip, our young
protagonist's, plight in the story. The strategy we are working on is asking questions. You should catch
your son or daughter reading the story of Phillip and Timothy and perhaps speaking in an island dialect!
I am also reading aloud Kathi Appelt's new book The Underneath. This is an amazing story and the
writing is as good as it gets. Students are really enjoying the figurative language and wonderful
descriptions.
