What is a Benchmark?
BENCHMARK: A specific statement of what a student should know and be able
to do at a specific time in his schooling. Benchmarks are used to measure a
student's progress toward meeting a standard.
O.K. Now what is a standard?
Standard: An overarching goal or theme. A standard statement describes, in
broad terms, what students should know and be able to do as a result of
their studies.
What is a Grade Level Indicator?
GLI: A specific statement of the knowledge and/or skills that a student is
expected to demonstrate at each grade level. These indicators serve as
checkpoints that monitor progress toward the benchmarks. (In other words,
they are objectives)
What is a Content Area?
A content area is a piece of the larger area of study. For example, Social
Studies in general is broken into seven content areas. History, Geography,
Economics, Government, People in Societies, Citizenship, and Social Studies
Methods.
Are there standards,Benchmarks and GLI for every content area?
Yes.
How many GLI / objectives are the kids going to have to know?
Aproximatly 450. This includes all Grade level indicators/objectives K-10
as spans over all seven content areas.
When do they have to take the test?
March of 2005
If a student passes the Science Portion, but fails the Math, do they have to
No. They only have to retake portions that they fail.
What kind of questions are on the OGT?
The OGT organizes questions into three or four catagories depending on what
is expected. For example, the OGT will ask a question that is considered
SHORT ANSWER. This requires a two to three sentence response. The OGT will
also ask EXTENDED RESPONSE QUESTIONS. This requires the student to supply a
well developed paragraph with supporting facts, examples and details. In
some cases, the students will have to respond with a FORMAL ESSAY. This is
typically a three to five paragraph essay that contains a thesis statement
and supporting paragraphs. Finally, the OGT will require students to
respond to MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS.
What are the advantages and disadvantages to these types of questions?
DISADVANTAGES- The written responses require students to have a solid
understanding of the question. The level of difficulty is obviously higher
and the students must have a firm command of the writing process in order to
be successful.
ADVANTAGES- One of the major advantages to these types of questions is that
they allow a student to gain partial credit for a response that is close.
Multiple choice questions are either right or wrong. There is no in between.
