Here are some links that will help you with your Take Action Project. They include samples, so pay close attention. SEMESTER ONE STUDENTS: REMEMBER THAT PETITIONS ARE NOT AN OPTION AT THIS TIME. SORRY! (BUT I'M LEAVING THE LINKS UP THERE FOR FUTURE USE...OR FOR KIDS WHO JUST WANT TO KNOW.)
•  Here's an interesting on-line lecture about how to make PSA's, complete with samples. View from home, though, `cuz most of the PSA's are blocked. •  How to format a petition for the House of Commons •  A good overall site for speech topics and tips.
•  Canadian Cancer Society PSA •  Here's another good guide, with some templates you can adapt •  If you're looking for a tips sheet that's a little shorter, try this.
•  An ad about girl-on-girl bullying. Click on "words hurt" •  Here's a popular site used for creating on-line petitions. •  This is a very detailed PDF file, but it's very thorough.
•  Here's a whole series of PSA's from the Concerned Children's Advertisers •  Here's a sample petition about Falun Gong. Never head of it? Read the petition. •  Great example of a speech by Stephen Lewis--he's speaking at the 2006 International AIDS conference, and he's condemning the gov't of S. Africa for their policies on fighting HIV/AIDS
•  Some PSA's from the Canadian Mental Health Association--check out the radio ad by Chantal Kreviazuk. •  What happens to your petition when you give it to your MP? Click here and do a "FIND" on petition--and you'll see! •  Another speech by Stephen Lewis. Try listening to this for 2 minutes WITHOUT being moved.
•  An ad about people with disabilities •  Here's a site that has a PDF file showing the proper format for a petition to the PROVINCIAL legislature. •  Toastmaster's is a community club that helps people develop their public speaking skills and leadership skills.
•  Here's a variety of PSA's about same-sex marriage. •  Here's some tips on getting your letter to the editor published--from the Obama campaign! •  An AMAZING speech by a 9-year old boy about the behaviour of fans at minor league hockey games.
•  A classic "old school"; PSA--Star Wars anti-smoking ad. Seriously. •  Here's a great list of tips if you're writing a letter to the editor and you really want it published. •  Craig Keilburger talks about meeting Mother Teresa
•  Stephen Lewis Foundation--PSA's about HIV/AIDS •  Interested in political ART? Look here. •  David Suzuki gives a speech about the environment
•  A PSA about autism. •  If you're thinking of a political SONG, here's some inspiration for you: •  Justin Trudeau gives the eulogy for his late father, Pierre Trudeau. An amazing speech.
•  A PSA about Alzheimer's disease. •  An interesting article that looks at mixing DANCE and politics. •  Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. (1963)
•  PSA's from the March of Dimes--there's a funny one with Leslie Neilson. (fart alert!!) •  A good overview of political THEATRE. •  Obama's "Yes we Can" speech. If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, pick it up at about minute 10.
•  A student PSA about body image •  An interesting look at Canadian political theatre. •  will.i.am's music video, based on the "Yes We Can Speech"
•  Here's one about how the world's governments spend their $. •  Here's some more political art.. •  "It's a new day"; by will.i.am
•  Another student PSA--this one about smoking. •  Nobody does feminist political art like the Guerilla Girls! •  How to find the name of YOUR Member of Parliament
•  If you're ready for something really dramatic--and challenging--take a look at the videos on this page. •  An incredible song written by a Cawthra student about child soldiers. SO powerful! •  Funny/cute video on public speaking tips from Craig Kielberger.
•  Once you've decided to do something, check out these guys for some extra ideas and inspiration!
