Nov. 10: We begin space tomorrow. Tonight research (internet or text) one
way that Canada has contributed to space research + technology. Describe in
some detail (4 or 5 sentences)
Nov. 6: Your second chemistry qu'est is Tuesday November 10. For an outline
stay tuned. Some text work to do and questions to practice:
Copy table 6.3, p 203 into your notes
Assess social, environmental, and economic impacts of the uses of common
elements and compounds, with reference to their physical and chemical
properties.
Topics
1. Copper Wire
2. Plastic
3. Crude Oil
4. DDT
Task:
1. List the physical and chemical properties OF EACH
2. Identify the social, environmental and economic impacts
3. Link one or more impacts to the property(ies)
4. Assess the impacts. How severe? Methods of SOLVING THE PROBLEM?
Are there any alternatives so that we can still enjoy the social benefits?
NOTE: THERE WILL BE A QUESTION SIMILAR TO THE ONE ABOVE ON THE UNIT QU'EST!
good practice: p 288 - 289 # 1 - 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19
and p 290 - 291 # 22, 23, 26, 28, 31, 40, 43 + 47
Also, study with the practice sheet I supplied, and review your last qu'est
to identify what type of questions you tend to get incorrect... is there a
pattern? are you not reading?
Nov. 3: Tomorrow is "take your child to work day" I will not see you, but
you must develop your chart for your lab on Thursday and period B must finish
p 46 in their course package as review.
Looking ahead: On Tuesday November 10 you have your second Unit qu'est.
The lab report is Due November 12. It involves your Purpose, your
observation chart (6 columns x seven stations) and your analysis questions
Nov. 2: Complete pages 55 to 58 in course pack. I will be checking
tomorrow.
Oct. 29: Urgent update...your test has been moved to Monday Nov 2.
Period B will need to meet in room 206 for their MLA training (reason for the
cancelled test). Homework work through as much of course pack pp 55 - 58 as
possible .
Oct 28: I hope you had fun on the trip today! You did very well!
Tonight you need to study for your Qu'est Friday.
Begin by completing the outlined questions listed last night (Oct. 27)I will
take up any of the ones you wish tomorrow. I promise one or two will be on
the qu'est.
Quest outline: Knowledge /12 : laboratory equipment 4mks
fill in the blanks about physical changes and atoms from the video and our
periodic table and its rules note (no word bank) 8 marks
Communicaitons / 9 : laboratory rules (2 marks)
Short answer questions re particle theory and state changes (no particle
theory scenarios) (7 marks)
Thinking /11: first twenty elements in order their names and symbols 5 marks)
classification into pure substance types and Mixture types (6 marks)
Application /10: Calculate density of an object showing work (6 marks) and
Physical vs chemical property
Oct 27: The qu'est is Friday October 30
Chemistry Qu'est review to be done for Thursday:
P 169 #1, 2, 3, +4
P188 #1, 2, 4, 5, 6 + 8
P 224 # 1, 6
Additional Review and topic covered on the test
• the definition of the physical property density and how it is
calculated
• lab safety
• laboratory equipment … name and function
• kinetic and potential energy
• state change
• physical change vs physical property vs chemical property
• the video called ATOMS especially the historical theorists, Dalton's
theory and Thompsons and Bohr's atom models BUT omit the concept of the
isotope and any numerical facts except the atomic masses and how to calculate
number of neutrons
• Be able to draw a Bohr-Rutherford diagram of a given atom assuming I
provide the name and atomic mass
• Review the names and symbols of the first twenty elements – in order!
