 4-B Class Information and Homework

The Fairview Community Council will be having their annual Food Collection for the Fairview Community on December 3rd, 4th, and 5th.  Obviously, this year more than most there is an increase in need.  Even within our school community there are families who are in need of our support.  If you could help your child over the next week or two to do some errands or jobs to raise a few dollars to help pick out some food staples.  A trip to the store together to look at cereal, soup, fruits, and vegetable staples would help your child connect with helping others and give them a great real life math lesson.  In 4-B, we try and fill the board ledge from one end to the other.  Anything you could do to help make this drive a success would be greatly appreciated.

What's Going On In Class:

Chapter 5 test was handed back on Nov. 26th.  Students did a great job.  We're moving on to Ch. 6 which is our move into double digit by double digit multiplication.  Students are successful with this skill through practice, practice, practice.  If your child is still struggling with times tables, this will complicate the process of being successful with this skill.

Tuesday : P. 71

Wednesday: P. 72

LANGUAGE ARTS

What's Going On In Class:

Our read-a-loud is a Newbery entitled Walk Two Moons, but Sharon Creech.

Our next reading project will involve the Scholastic "Dear America" and "My Name is America" diaries.  Directions were handed out and students have selected their small group title.  Small group discussions will take place on either December 4th or 5th.  Remaining deadlines will be listed here and on the assignment board in the classroom as we proceed.

Small Group Discussion for one of the Dear America titles will be Dec. 4th or 5th.

Responses to one of the Dear America diaries will be due on Dec. 8th.  Each response needs to be written in a well constructed paragraph.  They can be turned anytime before hand.  Please be sure to carefully read over instructions.

The project for the other Dear America needs to be completed by Dec. 17th.  They will be presented to the class on the 17th, 18th, and 19th.  Please pay close attention to directions regarding the project.

To help our students be successful on the PSSA Reading Test, we will be taking a skills pretest this week.  The results of the pretest will be used to plug students in to particular skills that may need additional practice prior to taking the PSSA test in Reading.  Skills will be presented to those in need over the next few months as part of their LA class.

I still have one Guiness Book of World Records Book here.  If your child ordered it, they do not recall.  If you recall, please let your child know so that I can give it to them.

Collecting November Book-It weeks of Dec. 1 & 8th.

Weekly Spelling: As explained in the Language Arts letter that either came in your back to school mail or came home on the first day of school, we pretest the week's Grade 4 words each Friday.  The words that are in error are placed in the assignment book spelling list for the following Friday.  Added to those words are words from a different publisher's grade 5 weekly list.  In addition, we also give a 100 word pretest each month of the everyday words people use in their writing.  Those words are also added to the weekly word list.  Any words that were wrong from that day's spelling test are also added back on to the list.  The list will come to a total of 15 words.  I would encourage parents to test their child on Tuesday or Wednesday, highlight the words in error and have them practice those words for Friday's test.

Homework: Spelling test Friday  12/5.
