FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How long is the library open each day? The lilbrary is open from 7:30 to 3:15 each day. Students may come to the library with passes each day. No passes are necessary after 2:30 pm. Teachers often schedule their classes to come throughout the day. Homebase times are another time when students can come to the library to read the current periodicals and newspapers or to check out books. Does the library have any rules? Yes, as with any area in the school, there are rules for the library. These rules are posted on the web page under rules. Mainly we want students to want to come to the library where they can have a quiet place to read or to do research. We do not permit gum or any beverages or food simply as a "cleanliness" factor. How long can books be checked out of the library? Books can be checked out of the library for a period of two weeks. They can also be renewed unless someone else has put a hold on the book. Magazines and overnight reference books can be checked out for overnight and need to be returned the next morning. Fines are charged for any overdue books. How much are the fines for overdue materials? Fines for overdue books and magazines are five cents per day per item overdue. Because students can check out any number of books sometimes they have several books out due on several different days. It is the responsibility of the student to keep track of when his or her books are due. When the overdue notices are sent to the homerooms, already the student owes a five cent fine on each item overdue. Does the library have computers for student research? Yes, the library has computers for student research. These computers are for research and word processing only and are not for playing games and accessing non-educational web sites. Students have signed technology policies that indicate how they are to use the computers. Any students not using the computers for educational purposes will be restricted from computer use for a designated period of time. Where can students return books to the library? The library has three places where students can return books, two of which are located outside the library. There are book drops outside the library door and between the sixtrh and seventh grade wings. This second book drop may be locked because of the possiblity the students think the book drop is a garbage can. The third place is right under the spot where books can be checked out. Will there be a free fine day this year? Free fine day will no longer exist at Fretz Middle School Library. This is to help students become more responsible for turning in their books and magazines on time. After Memorial Day in May, all books turned in late will be assessed an additional $1.00 surcharge along with the fine currently on the book. How many books can I check out of the library at one time? You may check out up to a maximum of five books at a time. This helps keep any fines at a minimum should the books become overdue. Can I become a library worker? Because of the change in the school schedule, there is no longer a need to have more than five or six library club members. Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, these members will be hand selected by the librarian. Three students will be selected to deliver the overdues in the morning and two or three additional students will be assigned to help with putting away periodicals at the end of the day and assisting with shutting down the computers. Should you be interested in helping out, you can give me your name and I will consider you for a position. What happens if I continually get caught with gum? Students who are regular offenders of the no gum policy will be restricted from coming to the library for each offense. As students are seen with gum or anything else chewable, they will be sent back to homebase immediately. |
