Week of February 13, 2012

Monday - Using literature book pages 86-100, students will complete note 
packets for American Literature Unit 2: "The Revolutionary Period." Homework 
for tomorrow is to finish the note packets.

Tuesday and Wednesday - We shall discuss Literature Unit 2: "The 
Revolutionary Period," literature book pages 86-100 plus the note packets 
from Monday.

Thursday - We shall go over literature pages 108-109 as we preview Benjamin 
Franklin, autobiographies, and the excerpt from "The Autobiography." Homework 
for Tuesday is to read literature pages 110-118 and complete page 119 (1-10, 
1-2, 1-2) to hand for 5 points.

Friday - Teacher In-Service. No students today.



Week of February 6, 2012

Monday through Thursday - This week, students will respond to the given 
persuasive prompt and hand in, for a test grade, stapled in the following 
order, from top to bottom, the self-evaluation checklist, the cluster sheet 
with key words, the rough draft with revisions and proofreading corrections, 
and the final, perfect copy. Remember, the essay must be 5, 6, or 7 
paragraphs. Homework for Friday is to study for the S.A.T. words of the day 
91-100 test.

Week of January 30, 2012

Monday through Friday - We shall go over the handout on writing tips, the 
self-evaluation checklist, and the packet of P.S.S.A. writing examples. This 
week, students will respond to the given informational prompt and hand in, 
for a test grade, stapled in the following order, from top to bottom, the 
self-evaluation checklist, the cluster sheet with key words, the rough draft 
with revisions and proofreading corrections, and the final, perfect copy. 
Remember, the essay must be 5, 6, or 7 paragraphs. Also, remember that the 
book report selection sheet is due this Tuesday.



Week of January 23, 2012

Monday - We shall review all materials for the midterm examination for 
Wednesday using the study guide.

Tuesday - We shall discuss the second semester book report. The book choice 
selection sheet is due on Tuesday, January 31. The book report that will 
count as a test grade is due on Tuesday, February 28. Homework for tomorrow 
is to study for the midterm examination.

Wednesday - Midterm examination on American Literature to 1650, P.S.S.A. 
Coach Book Unit 2, and P.S.S.A. Coach Book Unit 3.

Thursday - We will continue discussing the P.S.S.A. essays using the 
starboard screen. Homework for tomorrow is to study S.A.T. words of the day 
81-90 for the test.

Friday - S.A.T. words of the day 81-90 online test.



Week of January 16, 2012

Monday - No school - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Tuesday through Friday - We will use the starboard screen to project state 
released essays from previous years to evaluate the writing, including what 
constitutes scores of a 4, 3, 2, and 1. Also, we shall practice writing 
motivators (hooks), thesis statements, blueprints, closing statements, thesis 
restatements, and clinchers.



Week of January 9, 2012

Monday - P.S.S.A. writing instruction begins. We shall go over the state 
writing rubric and the transitions sheet. 

Tuesday and Wednesday - We shall continue the P.S.S.A. writing instruction. 
We shall review the state writing rubric and the transitions sheet. We shall 
go over the five steps of the writing process. We shall begin to use the 
starboard screen to project state released essays from previous years to 
evaluate the writing, including what constitutes scores of a 4, 3, 2, and 1. 
Homework for Thursday is to study S.A.T. words of the day 71-80 for the test.

spelling, subject-verb agreement, and proofreading).

Wednesday - I will be at a meeting in the high school today. Students will 
work on coach book pages 14-22 to hand in for 5 points.

Thursday - Review of P.S.S.A. Reading Comprehension Coach Book Unit 
3: "Answering Open-Ended Questions." The test is tomorrow. The unit covers 
pages 228-275. Study guide will be provided. Homework is to study for this 
test.

Friday - Test on P.S.S.A. Reading Comprehension Coach Book Unit 3: "Answering 
Open-Ended Questions." 



Week of December 19, 2011

Monday and Tuesday - We shall complete and go over proofreading practice 
worksheets. Homework for Wednesday is to study for the S.A.T. words of the 
day 61-70 online test.

Wednesday - S.A.T. words of the day 61-70 online test.

Thursday - We shall go over the rest of the proofreading exercises from 
Monday and Tuesday.

Friday - Dismissal will be at 11:00. We shall enjoy the Christmas concert in 
the auditorium presented by the G.N.A. band and chorus. Periods held will 
discuss holiday traditions.

rules, including possessive pronouns.

agreement.

Friday - Coach book pages 266-271 (proofreading practice).

Monday and Tuesday - We shall complete the packet of worksheets dealing with 
capitalization rules. Homework for Wednesday is to study the S.A.T. words of 
the day 51-60 for the online test.

Wednesday - Online S.A.T. words of the day 51-60 test.

Thursday - The eighth grade trip to the Wilkes-Barre Vocational-Technical 
Center will take place in the morning. Other periods will work on critical 
thinking activities.

Friday - Coach book pages 257-261 (spelling rules, including possessive 
pronouns).

Monday - No school - Good luck, hunters!

Tuesday - Coach book pages 246-253 (punctuation: quotation marks, commas, 
semicolons, colons, apostrophes).

Wednesday and Thursday - We shall complete the packet of worksheets dealing 
with quotation marks, commas, semicolons, colons, and apostrophes.

Friday - Coach book pages 254-256 (capitalization rules).



Week of November 21, 2011

Monday - We shall go over the packet of worksheets and notes on fragments and 
run-on sentences.

Tuesday - Coach book pages 232-238 (fragments and run-on sentences).

Wednesday - Coach book pages 239-245 (varying sentence length; review of 
sentence structure, fragments, run-ons, sentence length).

Thursday - No school - Happy Thanksgiving!

Friday - No school - happy shopping!

Monday - P.S.S.A. Coach Book Unit 2 Test - "Interpretation and Analysis of 
Fiction and Nonfiction Text." 

Tuesday - Coach book pages 230-231 (4 types of sentences: simple, compound, 
complex, and compound-complex) plus all notes from the board.

Wednesday - No classes today. Parents' Day is from 1:00 until 6:00.

Thursday - Packet of worksheets on the 4 types of sentences based on 
structure. Homework is to study S.A.T. words 41-50 for the online test.

Friday - S.A.T. words of the day 41-50 test.



Week of November 7, 2011

Monday - Coach book pages 217-221 (drama).

Tuesday - Coach book pages 222-225 (review of poetry and drama). Homework for 
tomorrow is to complete the book report for a test grade.

Wednesday - Book report is due for a test grade. We shall review for the 
P.S.S.A. Coach Book Unit 2 Test for Monday using a study guide. The test 
material will include coach book pages 162-225. 

Thursday - Study groups for the P.S.S.A. Coach Book Unit 2 Test. Homework is 
to study for the test.

Friday - No school - Veterans' Day.



Week of October 31, 2011 

Monday - Student dismissal is at 10:30 today. Also, we shall attend the 
senior Halloween assembly. Periods 1, 2, and 3 will orally read a horror 
story by Edgar Allan Poe after discussing the author.

Tuesday - Coach book pages 202-206 (point of view).

Wednesday - Coach book pages 207-210 (review of plot, characterization, 
setting, theme, and point of view). Homework is to study the S.A.T. words of 
the day 31-40 for the test.

Thursday - S.A.T. words of the day 31-40 online test.

Friday - Coach book pages 211-216 (poetry).

Monday - Coach book pages 176-182 (allusion and imagery).

Tuesday - Coach book pages 183-184 (review of allusion and imagery).

Wednesday - Coach book pages 185-192 (plot and characterization) plus notes 
on the board.

Thursday - Coach book pages 193-201 (setting and theme). Homework for 
tomorrow is to study the quarter one study quide for the quarter one test on 
American Literature Unit One plus figurative language.

Friday - Quarter one test on American Literature Unit One plus figurative 
language.



Week of October 17, 2011

Monday - Coach book pages 165-167 (metaphors). In pairs, students will create 
20 sentences containing metaphors to hand in for 4 points.

Tuesday - Coach book pages 168-170 (personification). In pairs, students will 
write 20 sentences containing personification to hand in for 4 points. 
Homework for tomorrow is to study the S.A.T. words of the day 21-30 for the 
online test. Also, you must hand in your first semester book report selection 
sheet tomorrow.

Wednesday - Online S.A.T. words of the day 21-30 test. Also, the first 
semester book report selection sheet is due today. Homework for tomorrow is 
for the students who are new to our district this year to be ready for the 
summer reading test.

Thursday - Students who are new to our district this year will take the 
summer reading test. Coach book pages 171-172 (hyperbole). In pairs, students 
will create 20 sentences containing hyperbole to hand in for 4 points. 

Friday - Coach book pages 173-175 (review of simile, metaphor, 
personification, and hyperbole). Period 3 - Assembly for Mr. Perrone.



Week of October 10, 2011

Monday - No school - Columbus Day.

Tuesday - We shall review American Literature Unit One: "The New Land to 
1750" for Thursday's test.

Wednesday - We shall discuss the first semester book report packets on 
biographies and autobiographies. The book report counts as a test grade. The 
choice selection sheet is due on October 19, while the actual book report is 
due on November 9. Homework is to study for the literature test.

Thursday - American Literature Unit One test - "The New Land to 1750."

Friday - We shall begin working on the P.S.S.A. Reading Comprehension Coach 
Book, Unit 2, today. Coach book pages 161-164 (similes). In pairs, students 
will devise 20 sentences containing similes to hand in for 4 points.



Week of October 3, 2011

Monday - We shall finish the preview of Jonathan Edwards, sermons, persuasive 
speeches, and the "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" excerpt. Students 
will read literature pages 72-75 and complete page 75 (1-8) to hand in for 3 
points. Homework for tomorrow is to study the S.A.T. words of the day 11-20 
for the test.

Tuesday - S.A.T. words of the day 11-20 online test.

Wednesday - We shall discuss Jonathan Edwards, sermons, persuasive speeches, 
and the "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" excerpt.

Thursday - We shall preview Cotton Mather, style, the Salem Witchcraft 
Trials, and the excerpt from "The Wonders of the Invisible World." Homework 
is to read pages 77-80 and to complete page 81 (1-9) to hand in for 3 points.

Friday - Page 81 (1-9) is due to hand in for 3 points as we discuss Mather 
and his excerpt on the witchcraft trial of Martha Carrier.



Week of September 26, 2011

Monday - We shall discuss literature book pages 50-57: William Bradford, 
narrative essays, and the excerpt from "Of Plymouth Plantation." Page 57 (1-
8) is to be completed to hand in for 2 points.

Tuesday and Wednesday - We shall preview literature book pages 15-17 plus 58-
59 (Anne Bradstreet, lyric poetry, Puritan plain style, and 2 poems). 
Homework for tomorrow is to read the poems on pages 15-17 and page 59 and to 
complete page 59 (1-4, 1-3) and page 18 (1-8, 1-3) to hand in for 5 points.

Thursday - Literature book page 59 (1-4, 1-3) and page 18 (1-8, 1-3) are due 
to hand in for 5 points as we discuss Anne Bradstreet, lyric poetry, Puritan 
plain style, and the 2 poems.

Friday - We shall begin to preview literature book pages 70-71 as we preview 
Jonathan Edwards, sermons, persuasive speeches, and the "Sinners in the Hands 
of 
an Angry God" excerpt.



Week of September 19, 2011

Monday - We shall discuss literature book pages 41-49: John Smith, historical 
accounts, and the excerpt from "The General History of Virginia." Page 48 (1-
8) is to be completed to hand in for 2 points. Homework for tomorrow is to 
study for the summer reading test on "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip 
Van Winkle."

Tuesday - Summer reading test on "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van 
Winkle."

Wednesday - We shall conclude our discussion on John Smith. Homework is to 
study for the online S.A.T. word of the day test on words 1-10.

Thursday - Online test on S.A.T. words of the day 1-10.

Friday - We will preview literature book pages 50-57: William Bradford,

Week of September 12, 2011

Monday and Tuesday - We shall discuss the unit one introductory note 
packets and literature pages 1 through 14.

Wednesday - We shall preview 3 Native American origin myths on a handout 
packet. Homework for tomorrow is to read these myths and answer the questions 
(1-5, 1-5, 1-6, 1-2, 1-6) to hand in for 5 points.

Thursday - Hand in Native American origin myth questions (1-5, 1-5, 1-6, 1-2, 
1-6) for 5 points. We will discuss the myths.

Friday - We shall preview John Smith, historical accounts, and the excerpt 
from "The General History of Virginia" on literature book pages 41-49.



Week of September 5, 2011

Monday - Labor Day - no school.

Tuesday - We shall create a graphic organizer pointing out the various 
elements of what English class entails and why it is vital for all. Also, we 
shall preview the literature textbooks.

Wednesday - Students will complete note packets silently, slowly, and 
independently using literature pages 1-14. Homework is to finish the packets 
for Monday. 

Thursday and Friday - No school due to the heavy rain that fell throughout 
the week.



Week of August 29, 2011

Monday - Teachers only.

Tuesday through Thursday - Welcome back to all students! Seats will be 
assigned. We shall go over the class rules, the informational sheet, and the 
course description sheet. You and your parent(s) must sign both copies of the 
class rules legibly in ink and return them to me. Bring a black pen or a 
pencil and a tablet to class starting on day 1. Also, books will be 
distributed. Take the books home and cover them. The check test on the summer 
independent reading assignment "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van 
Winkle" will be given on Tuesday, September 20th. Be ready since this is your 
first test grade for this course for the new school year. Any students who 
are new to our school district this year will be tested on the stories on 
Thursday, October 20th. 

Friday - No school.
