Language Arts - Unit 4



The following skills will be covered in this fourth unit of the year.
Phonics: oo (as in foot), soft c (as in cent), soft g (as in age), aw (as in saw), au (as in cause), a (as in all), ph (as in phone), tch (as in watch)
Reading: Comprehension: Drawing Conclusions Compare and Contrast Vocabulary: Introduce Antonyms Inflectional Endings (-er, -est) Study Skills: Graphic Aids (maps, charts) Grammar (English): Linking Verbs Helping Verbs Irregular Verbs Contractions Review sentence combining Review parts of a sentence: subject, predicate. Writing that compares Sentence rules: All sentences must have - 1. a subject 2. a predicate 3. punctuation 4. a capital letter at the beginning 5. spaces between the words. Punctuating sentences Handwriting: Introduce cursive letter forms and lower case letters (Zaner Bloser style) Review manuscript (printed) letter forms

We will be reading the following stories in this reading unit: Charlie Anderson by Barbara Abercrombie Fernando's Gift by Douglas Keister The Best Vacation Ever by Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats by Ann Earle "Going BATTY for Bats" from Time for Kids magazine
