~*~ A Patchwork of Poetry and Places
During our study of communities, each child chose one special place in our
community and wrote an Important Poem about that place. Our poems were
published onto quilt squares, which the children designed during our study
of
patterns in math. Books used as a center for this project included "The
Important Book" by Margaret Wise Brown and "The Keeping Quilt" by Patricia
Polacco) Click on Student Showcase to see our quilt/writings along with
those by other classes around the world.

~*~ That's The Way The Cookie Tumbles
This Internet Project involves predicting, stacking, and measuring oreo
cookies. Students will work in teams to stack as many oreos as possible,
recording their data each time. Our data will be graphed and sent in to the
Oreos web page. ~Photos will be included~

~*~The Great Egg Roll III
Students will use estimation and measurement to complete this project, in
which they will be competing to see who can roll a hard-boiled egg the
farthest. We will have one boy and one girl winner! Student will also have
the opportunity to compete in an egg "fashion show". Check out the results
from school across the world - and the winners of the egg fashion show!

Classroom Pet Exchange
This is a project that allows classes to trade class pets (stuffed animals).
The visiting pet will travel home with each student for one night. That
student will then write about his adventures with the pet in the pet's
journal (what they had for dinner, playing games, doing homework, going to
karate....) After the pet has traveled home with each student (and Mrs.
Madden!) he will return to his home - and our class pet will return to us.
This year our class pet, SPIKE, will be visiting Mrs. Shrader's 2nd Grade
Class at New Salem School in York, Pennsylavania. Visit the Classroom Pet
Exchange site to find out more about this project.

~*~ Kidspired Tales
After reading a book together as a read aloud, our class will write our own
version of the book ~ with a twist! Our story, along with an activity that
can be used as a follow-up to the book will be displayed on this web page.
The follow-up activity will be created using the Kidspiration software.
Visit this page for lots more Kidspiration activities created by other
classes around the world.

Seasonal Changes Through Our Eyes and Yours
This on-line project correlates with our study of Weather. It requires us
to
observe and record weather related information such as temperature, tree
observations, sunrise/sunset, and clothing. We will make these observations
and recordings three times this year (once in each season - fall, winter,
and
spring). Our results will be displayed on our class page at this project
site. We will be able to compare our finding with those of classes across
the
nation.

~*~The Monster Exchange
In this project students drew monsters of their choice - silly, funny,
scary, happy...Then students wrote clear directions on how to recreate
their monsters. We then traded directions with Mrs. Brown's Class from
Longmont, Colorado, who did the same. Both classes recreated the monsters
using only the directions written by the partner class. All results are
posted on the website so that students can see the recreations and
originals.
How well can our students write clear and specific directions?? Check out
this site to find out! Just scroll down to find Brushy Creek Elementary and
click on our class! Be sure to visit the page of our partner class to see
how well we recreated their monsters, also!

~*~Kidspired Frosty Tales
This project will display our work with the book Gingerbread Baby by Jan
Brett. It will also contain lots of activities, links, and Kidspiration
templates for elementary students.
http://www.northcanton.sparcc.org/~ptk1nc/Frosty2003/index.html
~*~Document Based Questions
In this project students can examine authentic documents from history, then
answer questions about them. We have two DBQ projects on this site. One is
about Mexico and the other is about Greece/the Olympics. After students
answer the questions, they can choose to send the answers to the teacher and
she will post responses on the website.

~*~Kidspired Bunnies
Yet another Kidspiration project! We just can't get enough of this
software.
After reading the book, Show and Tell Bunnies we decided to write
sequels to the book. You can see one of our versions at this project page.
You can also find our Kidspiration activity, "Are Spiders Insects?" This
book was a good starting point for our bug unit.

Frosty Readers 2002
Once again, my class participated in winter themed internet project with
other schools across the nation. Click on Student Showcase to see the
projects that each class completed. Also, click on "Frosty Activities" to
play games about the books in several of the projects (including Dream
Snow)! If you enjoy this project, please sign the Guestbook on this page so
we can read your comments!

Graph Goodies
We're very excited to be a part of this on-line math project. We showcased
one graph from our Nutrition unit, along with several questions about our
graph. Our graph was published as part of an on-line interactive graph
book. Visit the Math Links section for cool places to visit to create
your own graphs and fun math activities.

Storyville Math
We read Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream by Marilyn Burns during math one day.
It
is a book about multiplication (and how it is all round us, everyday).
After
reading this book, we were inspired to write our own multiplication
stories.
We then typed them on the computer in KidPix. We published these on
Storyville Math, a website that ten classes across the nation participated
in. This is a cool site because it provides worksheets of the classes'
problems at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week it posts
the
illustrated answers by the students who wrote the problems! This way we can
solve all of the problems and check our own work on the computer at the end
of the week!
Our work will be showcased in April, so check back!

Spring Into Life
We completed this project during our study of insects in early April. Check
it out to learn lots of interesting insect facts! Don't forget to visit the
Activities Page for fun games and quizes!

The Monster Exchange
In this project, our class created Monsters. Some were silly, some scary;
some were funny, others crazy; but they were all very creative! After
creating our monsters, we wrote descriptive paragraphs about our monsters.
We traded monster descriptions with Ms. Clementi's 2/3 class from New
Jersey and tried to recreate each others monsters. This was a terrific
project for realizing the importance of using description in writing. Our
recreations are posted!!

Grandmother and Me
In this project, students share with other children from around the world
about their grandmother(s). They tell everyone the word for "grandmother"
in
their language, what they call their grandmother, ways they spend time (or
did spend time) with their grandmother and why she is very special. This
project ties into our study of families. **Click on the "View More Pages"
window to find pages of work by our students.

Frosty Readers 2005
At the time of this project, we were learning about biographies so our class
read the book Snowflake Bentley. As we read, we took notes about the
important events in his life. We continued reading biographies, interviewed
important people at our school, and wrote our own biographies!

Random Acts of Kindness
Our class will be performing "Random Acts of Kindness" throughout the school
year. We will start by doing kind things for our classmates and then spread
to our school and community. We hope to brighten the day of others through
our small acts of kindness...and it makes us feel better about ourselves,
too!

Literature Circles Extension Project
Our class read books by Patricia Polacco and participate in literature
circle
discussions about the stories. Students then created extension projects
related to the books that were read. Examples of student projects are
posted
on this project site.

Chocolate Stories
Students read Chocolate-themed literature in the classroom. Then
students created chocolate-related survey questions to ask others. After
collecting their data, students tallied the results and created graphs.
Students also invented new chocolate candy bars and we practiced writing
commercials to sell them! Who knew learning could be so yummy??

Classroom Pet Exchange
Our class has partnered with Mrs. Sharp's 2nd grade class in Shawnee, Kansas
for this project. Each class will send their class pet to visit the other
class. While there, each child will take the visiting pet home for one
night
and write in a journal about their adventures together. Once all children
have taken the pet home, we will send the pets home again. When the pets
arrive back to their home school children will take their own class pet home
for a night to read the journal filled with his/her adventure. What a fun
reading and writing project!

Mouse Tales
During our study of government, we read Woodrow, The White House Mouse.
After reading this story, we brainstormed some of the pros and cons
of being President of the United States. We even tried to imagine how we
would look as President....click on the link below to see samples of our
work!

Monster Exchange 2007-2008 - French Class
In this descriptive writing project, students in both of my classes created
an original monster and wrote a descriptive paragraph describing the
monster. Students then traded paragraphs with a classmate to see if they
could recreate the monster by just reading the paragraph. Partners met to
discuss what was difficult and what improvements needed to be made to the
descriptive paragraphs to make them more clear. After refining the
descriptive paragraphs, my two classes traded descriptive writings with each
other and had their monster redrawn by a student in the other class. Were
they able to recreate the monsters through the descriptive paragraphs?

Shark Bytes
In this project, students explored sharks through a non-fiction literature
unit. During this unit, students used technology and books to learn
fascinating facts about sharks. Each student researched one type of shark
and created their own non-fiction book about it. Our completed project will
be summarized and samples will be posted at the project page below:
