Good Behavior Program/Demerits

GOOD BEHAVIOR PROGRAM

MINISCHOOL RULES:

It is expected that all students will be…

Prompt—to school, classes, and with assignments

Prepared—with all materials, including text, notebook, paper, pencil, etc.

Polite—to all students, staff, and faculty

Participating—to be present in both mind and body

No student will be permitted to interfere with the learning of others.

DEMERITS:

Demerits are a paper record of behaviors that detract from the learning that should be taking place or violate school/minischool rules and guidelines. Demerits count towards behavior reward activities scheduled for each nine weeks.  Students not choosing to behave in the expected manner will be given a demerit.  Below are examples of behaviors which earn demerits:

1.  not having all necessary materials needed for class

2.  talking without permission

3.  not participating in class activity/work by sleeping, writing personal notes, drawing, working on other assignments, or being off-task

4.  using profanity or abusive language (if directed towards faculty/staff, student will be referred immediately to the principal) (depending on the language, this can also be considered ‘sexual harassment’ which also requires referral to the principal)

5.  writing on desks, walls, or property of others

6.  disturbing others

7.  horseplay - pushing, tripping, throwing, "playing around"

8.  failing to show respect for others and their property

9.  inappropriate behavior in restroom, cafeteria, or halls

10.  being out of their assigned seat or assigned area

11.  gum

CONSEQUENCES for rule violations could include ANY of the following:

a.  warning                                            f.  team conference with student and/or parent

b.  demerit                                            g.  referral to principal

c.  parent notification                             h. isolation (lunch or classroom)

d.  write-off                                          i.  corporal punishment  (send a written notice if you do NOT

e.  morning detention                                         want your child to receive corporal punishment)

REWARDS:

Snack passes, locker passes, candy, bonus points, reward activities, and field trips all constitute rewards.

DISCIPLINARY PROCESS:

There is a step process by which a student reaches different levels of discipline based on the number of demerits they receive each nine weeks.  Severe violations may cause any or all of these steps to be bypassed and require immediate referral to the assistant principal, Laura Honeyman.

Step 1              5 demerits        parent notification

Step 2              10 demerits      parent notification, conference with student, AND

one of the following:  write-off OR lunch isolation (at teacher discretion)

Step 3              15 demerits      conference with parent and student AND

one of the following:  morning detention, write off, or classroom isolation

Step 4              20 demerits      referral to the principal

A student will be referred to the principal for EVERY 5 demerits they receive over the 20.
