Does my child have to take PE in middle school? Sixth and seventh graders are required to take a PE class. Eighth graders do not have to take a PE class, but may choose to take a PE class as one of their three electives. Does dance count as a PE class? In 7th and 8th grade, dance will count as a PE class. If a student chooses to take dance as their PE class, they cannot take athletics or lifetime fitness. The state will only allow students to take one PE class per year. How can my child get a high school foreign language credit? Students must take either French 1A or Spanish 1A in 7th grade and then the 1B class in 8th grade to get one high school foreign language credit. The 1A class is the first semester freshman language class spread out over one year. The 1B class is second semester of freshman foriegn language spread out over the 8th grade year. Can my child start a foreign language class in 8th grade? No, they must start the foreign language credit in their 7th grade year. Can my child get 1/2 credit if they only take one year of a language? No, they must complete both years or start the program over in high school. Do students have to take a foreign language in middle school? No, there is plenty of time in high school to take the required foreign language classes. What are the different high school graduation requirements? Please refer to page 15 of the online course catalog for a complete chart of the graduation requirements. At the end of 6th grade, all TAG math 6th grade students will be given an algebra qualifying exam. Those scores along with students grades and benchmarks will be reviewed. If a student demonstrates mastery of the 8th grade math curriculum, they will be placed in algebra in 7th grade. Ath the end of 7th grade, all 7th grade accel math students will be given the algebra qualifying exam and the same data as listed above will be reviewed. If the student shows mastery of the 8th grade curriculum, they will be placed in algebra for their 8th grade school year. What happens if my child does not pass the TAKS test? If a 6th or 7th grader does not pass the TAKS math or reading test, they will have to replace one or bothe elective classes with a TAKS booster class the following school year. If an 8th grader does not pass the reading or math TAKS test after three tries, a grade placement committee will be called to determine if the child should move on to 9th grade or repeat 8th grade. Whether the student repeats 8th grade or is placed in 9th grade, he or shee will have to take a TAKS booster class in lieu of an elective. What is the difference between wellness education and athletics? Wellness education takes place during the day and does not require after school practice. During wellness education, students participate in physical fitness activities and games, but are not competing against other schools. Students take athletics during the day and must also attend before or after school practices if the student makes the competitive team. (Football, volleyball, basketball, or track) If a student does not make the team, they will run and condition for other sports. Once a student is in athletics, they are committed to the full year program. A student may not change to PE if they do not make the team. My son wants to try out for basketball, but does not want to play football. Boys who do not wish to play football should sign up for wellness education. After football season they may tryout for basketball. If they make the basketball team, their schedule will be changed to athletics at that time. Does multimedia count as a tech apps credit for high school? Multimedia does not count as a tech apps credit. Students will still need to plan on taking a tech apps class in high school. What high school credits can my child earn in middle school? Students in middle school may earn one credit in foreign langauge by taking a foreign language in 7th and 8th grade. Students in 8th grade can earn a tech apps credit by taking BCIS. Students may earn up to two math credits, algebra and geometry. |
