This USGS time scale gives the basic information one would want
to know about the history of the earth. It also gives very short
explanations for the origin of the names of the time periods. I
recommend this for middle school students.

This story is recorded as a first-hand account by one of the
survivors, Pliny, the Younger. Almost 1,700 years later the city
was rediscovered by someone who read the story. The result led to
the birth of the science of Archaeology.
