My education started at Lake Highlands Elementary School in Dallas,
Texas, where I was born and raised. "Family" was the central theme to
my upbringing. I have a sister and two brothers, and we were all very
involved in sports, school government, church youth groups and
summer camps. For my freshman year of college, I attended school in
California. I transferred to Baylor University graduating with a B.S. in
Education. I taught for four years before beginning work on my Masters
in Educational Administration at North Texas. I taught for seven years in
Plano ISD and have been with Friendswood for the past seventeen years.
I am certified to teach all subjects in grades first through sixth. I taught
fifth grade for seven years and have been in fourth for the last seventeen.
My emphasis is in Reading and GT. I do have all of my GT hours and
enjoy using those strategies with all of my students. I have a daughter
who is attending high school as a sophomore!
I have had the opportunity to travel and work with mission projects and
schools in Mexico, France, Austria, Prague and Buddapest. Those experiences
have helped to enrich my background for my students, as well as
helping to bring the outside world to them. I am also involved with a
creative problem-solving competition called Odyssey of the Mind. I have helped
to coach a team which works during the school year on a specific
problem they have to solve and present. Again, this is another
opportunity to help foster creativity and learn excellent problem-solving
skills.
I love to read in all areas and share books- and more books- with my
students. I really enjoy making connections through history, reading, math
and science.
I have one "commandment" in my class: 'Thou shalt not interfere with
the creative learning and thinking that takes place in this class.' I feel it
is my job to provide my students with a safe environment to feel free to
stretch themselves. My aim is for my students to be making connections
with reading and social studies, math and art, geography and science. I
am committed to reading to my students daily and showering them with
as much of the wonderful children's literature- in ALL subject areas- as I
can. I expect my students to take responsibility for their own learning. I
help to introduce, reinforce, and facilitate. I expect my parents to review
and read with their students at home. My students are the ones that are
responsible for being committed to learning. A goal is to model being a
life-long learner.
