Parental involvement can be a huge factor in academic and social improvement
in middle school. Here are some tips for motivating your kids :
Quality Time-
• Set aside family time each week on your calendar
Reading-
• Create "drop everything and read" (DEAR) times when family can sit
down and read uninterrupted
• Help your children start their own library of books
• Take your children to the library, help them get their own library
cards and check out books regularly
Self Esteem-
• Let your kids overhear you praising them to others
• Try "King/Queen for a Day" for good report cards
Motivation- Children need the "Four A's":
• Attention
• Appreciation
• Affection
• Acceptance
Responsibility-
• Teach children to take responsibility for their choices
• Encourage your child to write assignments and test dates in their day
planners
• Check out your students grades frequently on the Granite District web
site
• Check out the teachers web sites frequently for updates
• If your child has a missing assignment, first have them talk to the
teacher about the assignment. Encourage them to communicate to their
teachers in a positive way.
Reinforce Learning-
• Encourage kids to collect things
• Test their math skills by helping devise grocery and travel estimates
• Encourage your children to use some of the web sites to practice
their test taking skills on our practice page
