School Year Pointers

Helpful Hint for having a successful school year:
Parental involvement can be a huge factor in academic and social improvement
in middle school. Here are some tips for motivating your kids :

Quality Time-
•	Set aside family time each week on your calendar

Reading-
•	Create "drop everything and read" (DEAR) times when family can sit
down and read uninterrupted
•	Help your children start their own library of books
•	Take your children to the library, help them get their own library
cards and check out books regularly

Self Esteem-
•	Let your kids overhear you praising them to others
•	Try "King/Queen for a Day" for good report cards

Motivation- Children need the "Four A's":
•	Attention
•	Appreciation
•	Affection
•	Acceptance

Responsibility-
•	Teach children to take responsibility for their choices
•	Encourage your child to write assignments and test dates in their day
planners
•	Check out your students grades frequently on the Granite District web
site
•	Check out the teachers web sites frequently for updates
•	If your child has a missing assignment, first have them talk to the
teacher about the assignment. Encourage them to communicate to their
teachers in a positive way.

Reinforce Learning-
•	Encourage kids to collect things
•	Test their math skills by helping devise grocery and travel estimates
