Dear families:

Happy New Year! It is wonderful to have your children back with us after the Winter Break. Your children are important to us. In fact, for most of us at Hudtloff, our work with your children means way more than just a job. Your children are our future, the future of America. We do not take this responsibility lightly. It is my belief that American public schools should offer the best education possible and all of my efforts are to this end.

At Hudtloff, we are striving to ensure each of your children receive the best education possible to prepare them for a successful future. We know that in order for this to happen, we need you as our partners. Please be sure that your students complete their homework everyday so that they are prepared for new learning each day. As we came to the mid-quarter, I was disappointed by the significant number of students who earned Ds or Fs on their progress reports largely because of not completing their homework on time. When students don’t finish their classwork and/or homework they are hurting themselves academically as well as the others in their class because it is hard to be a positive participant if you are not prepared with the necessary skills or knowledge to move to the next step of learning with the rest of the class. We offer After-School Homework Club Monday through Thursday from 3:05-4:10 to support students who may need it.

All students will be expected to complete a Science Fair project by mid-February. Your child’s science teacher will communicate dates and requirements for this significant experience. Please plan to attend HMS Science Fair on Wednesday, February 29, from 5-7 pm. We invite you to enjoy a free spaghetti dinner with your family and other Hudtloff families. The district Science Fair is on Saturday, March 10, and the PLU Science Fair is Saturday, March 24.

The new school construction is coming along well ahead of schedule. It is expected that we will move into the new school during Winter Break 2012. The portables, gym, and music building are scheduled for tear down as soon as school ends this June. Our two self-contained programs will be temporarily housed at another school from September –December. We intend for PE classes to be held in the new gym beginning next fall. Our library will be on limited use in the fall in order to accommodate our band and choir programs in that space. The parent drop off and pick up areas will be changing as well as parking in the fall, so look for future information regarding this. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me at: 253-583-5402.

Sincerely,
Moureen David, Principal

Hudtloff recognized for School of Distinction

For the third year in a row, Hudtloff has earned special state recognition as “School of Distinction” for being in the top five percent of most improvement over a five year period compared to all other schools in Washington State. This means a great deal to all of us as it indicates that we are on the right path for providing our students with a rigorous education that will prepare them for citizenship, college, and careers. This recognition is sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa, The Center for Educational Effectiveness, and other state organizations.

Replacement Levy Proposal

Voters to consider replacement levy proposal
The Clover Park School District Board of Directors is asking voters to consider a four-year, replacement educational programs and operations levy on Tuesday, Feb. 14. This is not a new tax. This levy replaces the district's 2008 educational and operations levy, which expires in December 2012.
According to figures from the Pierce County Assessor, Clover Park’s proposed levy tax rate is one of the lowest in Pierce County.
If approved, levy funds will continue to provide:
• Classroom support;
• School maintenance and operations;
• School technology; and
• Safety and security.
Educational program and operations levies cover programs and services that don't fall within the state's definition of basic education. In Clover Park, educational program and operations levies currently account for approximately 15 percent of the district's budget— about $144 million in 2011-12 school year.

Register to Vote
If you would like to become a registered voter in Pierce County or update your voter registration, simply complete an official voter registration form. The forms are available at all Clover Park School District schools.

You must be:
 A United States citizen;
 18 years of age on or before the next election; and
