FRANZ BAKERY TOUR

The students in C-1 and C-2 visited Franz Bakery on April 22. We got to take a guided tour of the bakery, led by our terrific tour guide, Sue. The smell of the baking bread was just wonderful! We weren't allowed to take any photos inside of the bakery (where the bread-making process takes place), but were able to take pictures in the visitors tour room. Everyone had a snack of freshly baked bread and apple juice. We also enjoyed the many games and activities that Franz provided for us in the tour room (which we did while C-1 was taking their tour). At the end of the tour, Franz gave each child and parent chaperone a delightful yellow "Franz Goodie Box", filled with a mini loaf of bread, a magnet, a bookmark, a pencil, and much much more! Thank you, Franz Bakery, for providing this terrific free field trip for us!

SEA-TAC AIRPORT FIELD TRIP

The students in C-2 visited Sea-Tac Airport on April 16. We enjoyed a two-hour guided tour of the airport, led by our Port of Seattle airport guide, Penny. The most exciting parts of this field trip were going through airport security (and having to take off our shoes), riding on the subway trains three different times, using the "moving sidewalks", and riding on the second longest escalator in Washington State! Following our tour, we ate lunch at the southern-most end of the airport, near the baggage claim.

MEASUREMENT UNIT - EVERYDAY MATH

One of our recent units in Everyday Math focused on Measurement. The students measured a standing long-jump and also measured arm spans (from fingertip to fingertip) in inches and centimeters. The students had a lot of fun learning how to measure! We also learned how to take our measurement data and make a bar graph.

FAMILY FARMER'S MARKET NIGHT

The Family Farmer's Market Night was held on April 7, 2009. This event was a part of the "Eat Better, Feel Better" program that Maple has been participating in this school year. Students and their families ate a healthy taco salad for dinner, and then got to "shop" at the "Maple Market" for fresh fruits and vegetables using play money. Students also got to take home tomato seeds that they planted, and play a special fruits and vegetables BINGO game. At the end of the event, a raffle was held, and lots of families won terrific prizes!
