MULTI-ETHNIC DINNER
The annual Multi-Ethnic Dinner was held on
October 29. K-2nd grade families met in the gym, while the upper grade
students met in the main school building. Delicious foods from many different
cultures were served, and a raffle was held by the PTSA. In addition, parents
signed up for a November parent-teacher conference appointment. A fantastic
time was had by all!
BOOK BOXES
We have been enjoying our brightly colored
red and blue Book Boxes that we received through the generous donations of
friends who read our grant proposal at the DonorsChoose.org website!
MISSION DELICIOUS
On October 21 C-2 participated in the
"Mission Delicious" program, which promotes eating healthy foods every day. We
worked with the Mission Delicious instructors in Maple's lunchroom. The
students learned basic nutrition concepts, and how to make a healthy meal. The
children got to help the instructors make whole wheat pancakes topped with
strawberries and vanilla yogurt, and tortilla wraps filled with spinach, cream
cheese, and turkey, and then got to have a taste of each! Thank you, Mission
Delicious!
"THINKING ABOUT OUR
READING" LESSONS WITH MS. PROJANSKY
Ms. Projansky, one of Maple's wonderful
E.L.L. teachers, visited our class to teach us some lessons on how to think
about the things that we read. We used post-it notes to jot down "WOWS",
"QUESTIONS", and "REMINDS ME OF" thoughts that came to our mind as we were
reading the pages of a story. After sharing our post-it note thoughts with a
partner, we put them on a large sheet of chart paper for everyone to read.
SOIL UNIT
We have been learning about soil and
earthworms in Science. The students got to examine earthworms up close at
their Science PCP class. In our homeroom, we observed local soil from Maple's
garden, and also took a close look at samples of sand, clay, and humus.
SEA-TAC AIRPORT FIELD
TRIP
The students in C-2 visited Sea-Tac
Airport on October 27. We enjoyed a two-hour guided tour of the airport, led
by our Port of Seattle airport guide, Janice. The most exciting parts of this
field trip were going through airport security (and having to take off our
shoes), riding on the subway trains three different times, using the "moving
sidewalk", and riding on the second longest escalator in Washington State!
Following our tour, we ate lunch at the southern-most end of the airport, near
the baggage claim. This field trip has been provided free to us by the Port of
Seattle for the past decade - due to budget cuts at the Port, this field trip
will no longer be provided to elementary students. If you'd like to help,
please write to the Port Commissioners and ask them to reconsider funding this
very educational trip for children. Their addresses are:

FACT FAMILIES IN MATH
We have been learning about Fact Families
in EveryDay Math. We have been using "fact triangles" to help us learn about
the members of a fact family.
HUMAN BODY SKELETONS
We made human body skeletons on Oct. 30.
We labeled the major bones of the body. Then we visited one of our favorite
places, the Maple front office, to share our skeletons with Principal Hunter,
the office staff, school counselor Ms. Escobar, and the school nurse Ms.
Kurose! Thank you for the red vines, Mrs. Hunter! After that, we joined C-1
for a treat and to watch a special movie.
